Hugo Macedo was a member of the first 'sonora' (small Cuban music group with trumpets - like La Sonora Matancera) in Peru, directed by his pianist brother Luis Young Agüero, aka 'Lucho' Macedo: the Sonora de Lucho Macedo. His other brothers Pochi and Chiquito were singers in the sonora while he performed as a timbalero (timbales player). After nine years with don Lucho he founded the Sonora Casino of Hugo Macedo in 1964, later incorporating his wife, Lucía 'Pochita' Rivera as a vocalist. 'Trompeteros' was released on the highly collectible Peruvian record label MAG in 1972 and has been very hard to find until now. Previously, the Sonora Casino had already recorded several albums for Philips since the mid-60s. At the time their repertoire was traditional Cuban fare like the cha cha cha, bolero, and guaracha, as well as the Colombian cumbia. 

Their MAG period would start in 1970 with the album 'Pochita y la Sonora Casino de Hugo Macedo' in which Hugo Macedo's wife was displayed on the front cover, with a similar follow-up on 'Trompeteros' (yes that's her in the pink polyester suit!), creating some confusion since vocalist Pachito Nalmy was the actual main singer on the record. Pachito, who hailed from the 'home of salsa in Peru', Callao, demonstrates here a great vocal versatility as demonstrated on songs like 'Guajira del amor', with a heavy rhythm that will surely delight boogaloo lovers, or the bolero number 'Pasa, pasa', being both songs own compositions of the multitalented Nalmy. Guarachas, descargas, and cumbias complete the offering of this fantastic album, one of the strongest tropical LPs in the MAG catalog. But the real banger here is the astounding 'Astronautas a Mercurio', a cosmic descarga (Latin jam session) full of electronic effects, filtered voices (thanks to the madman of Peru, Melcochita), and fierce guitars with wah-wah and raw distortion, closer to the sound of a psychedelic rock recording on MAG than the classic tropical sound of La Sonora Casino. Juxtaposed with all those surprising elements is an impressive Latin brass section that boosts the intensity of the song to the highest levels. 12 years ago the song surfaced on the 'Obsession' compilation and it has been my mission since then to track down the masters and artwork for the album and reissue it in top quality form. It is not surprising that 'Trompeteros' has become in recent years a highly sought-after album not only by Latin music collectors but also by those after the most exotic and experimental psychedelic global sounds around and now, thanks to the folks at Vampi Soul, it's available for all you Latin music astronauts to blow your minds and travel to the jungles of planet Mercury.
