Very hard to find original 1956 Sonny Rollins Quartet Prestige deep groove LP “Tenor Madness” (Prestige PRLP 7047), with 446 W. 50th St, NYC on the label RVG in dead wax.
This LP features Sonny Rollins (tenor sax), Paul Chambers (bass), Red Garland (piano), Philly Joe Jones (drums) and special guest John Coltrane joining in on the title track.
The tracklist is: Tenor Madness/When Your Lover Has Gone/Paul’s Pal/My Reverie/The Most Beautiful Girl In The World.
The playback on the LP is crisp and clear and the performances come through great. There are some sleeve scuffs and several small to medium scratches. The scratches are each audible for several revolutions and there is some light occasional surface noise and a few other light “ticks”. None of this overwhelms the performances and actually when I play graded the LP the playback was much better than I anticipated. The cover is basically sound but there is overall wear and aging and a fairly sizable stain and a name written on the back (the liner notes and graphics are still clear). There is a name written on one label. Although not a near mint copy, this one should do until a top grade copy comes available (if ever, and at what price).
