A Blue Note essential, Sonny Rollins "Newk's Time" is part of the Blue Note 75 anniversary vinyl reissue campaign which featured over 100 classic BN titles.
Rollins is joined by Wynton Kelly, Doug Watkins and the great Philly Joe Jones. The album features performances recorded in 1957 at the Van Gelder Studio in New Jersey.
Review: Newk's Time is an album by Sonny Rollins. It was his third album for Blue Note Records, recorded in 1957 and released in 1958. The title of the album is a reference to Rollins' nickname "Newk," which is apparently based on his resemblance to Donald Newcombe, a Major League Baseball pitcher who shared the same nickname. "Namely You" was taken from the Broadway show Li'l Abner. The release marked the beginning of the Blue Note 4000 series. "In his early prime and well-respected, tenor saxophonist Sonny Rollins cut this fine hard bop date as one of several late-'50s sessions for Blue Note...a must for fans of this most important of classic hard bop soloists." -Stephen Cook, AllMusic.com
