Description
1984 Original Jazz Classics Stereo Reissue of 1962 Jazzland Release of Bandleader/Composer/Alto Saxophonist Sonny "Red" Kyner Entitled Images with Blue Mitchell and Grant Green, Produced by Orrin Keepnews, Recording Engineer Is Ray Fowler, Recorded & Mastered at Plaza Sound Studios in New York City, Liner Notes by Ira Gitler - "Sonny Red was a good but not great altoist who was somewhat lost in the shuffle in the 1960s and '70s. He worked in Detroit with Barry Harris (1949-1952), in 1954 temporarily switched to tenor while with Frank Rosolino, and later that year joined Art Blakey briefly. In 1957, with his arrival in New York he gained some recognition, recording with Curtis Fuller and Paul Quinichette, in addition to having several dates as a leader (1958-1962) for Savoy, Blue Note, and particularly Jazzland. Despite some freelancing and recording with Clifford Jordan, Pony Poindexter, Donald Byrd, Kenny Dorham, and Yusef Lateef among others in the 1960s, Red was in obscurity by the 1970s." - "The leader, Sonny Red Kyner (alto), never really became the individual strong player that his playing hinted he might develop into. Basically he was in the Charlie Parker-Jackie McLean tradition, and the material here had that spirit, but little punch. Others involved were Grant Green (guitar), Barry Harris (piano), George Tucker, (bass), Lex Humphries or Jimmy Cobb (drums). Trumpeter Blue Mitchell was also featured on three cuts." - Sensational Personnel for the Various Lineups Include Brilliant Composer Sonny Red on Alto Saxophone, the Amazing Blue Mitchell on Trumpet, the Legendary Grant Green on Guitar, the Great Barry Harris on Piano, George Tucker on Bass & Lex Humphries or the Talented Jimmy Cobb on Drums! - Selections on Side 1 Are Original Sonny Red Compositions Images at 6 Minutes 25 Seconds, Blues for Donna and Dodge City - Tracks for Side 2 Consist of the Sonny Red Penned Blue Sonny at 8 Minutes 29 Seconds, the Rhythm Thing and the Richard Rodgers/Lorenz Hart Standard Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered - Used Copy, Cover Very Good++, Record Very Good++ - Stereo Recording, Product Code OJC-148 - California Residents Add 9.75% Sales Tax - International S & H Extra -
