Here is the 45 RPM Sun Record #228, The Signifying Monkey / Listen To Me Baby by Smokey Joe Baugh which was recorded August 25, 1955 in Memphis, TN.

Smokey Joe Baugh was around the Memphis music scene from an early age. Born in Helena, AK, he embarked on a musical career in 1947 working as a pianist in Memphis and West Memphis. Around 1952 he joined a band and also for a few months performed with Howlin' Wolf on radio KWEM in West Memphis, AK.

He cut four sessions for Sun Records as Smokey Joe in 1955-56 and had this single, The Signifying Monkey, Sun 228, which was released in mid September 1955 (also released as Flip 228). Hundreds of versions of The Signifying Monkey have been recorded, among them a version by Chuck Berry. With Johnny Bernero on drums, Smokey Joe's Signifying Monkey was assured of a fine shuffle rhythm, and it enjoyed some local chart action after its release. The flipside Listen To Me Baby is a solid outing in the jump blues mode with a powerful piano solo.

This particular record seems to be in good but used condition without significant wear and no visable signs of scratching. The label has a small wear spot probably caused by the removal of a price sticker. It does not come in its original record sleeve or envelope. Presently it is not possible to test the playing condition of the record. This 45 RPM record would be a nice addition to a blues or Sun Record collection because of its very historic place in the Memphis music scene.
