It's always a problem grading these lovely old SKA records.
They went to lots of parties.
That means that they're a bit battered and that's why many have names written on the label.
HOWEVER... they're usually cut VERY LOUD and though they look a bit rough, they sound OK (especially if you press the "Mono" button).
This means that a 60's Ska goodie can be perfectly acceptable, even if it looks R.A.A.B.B. (Rough As A Bear's Bottom)..
Please bear that in mind when reading my descriptions.
Here we have the legendary "Guns Of Navarone" on it's first Jamaican pressing 1964 from the Mu-Zik City label, number C10.
You'll notice that it ISN'T credited to The Skatalites, as on the UK red and white Island pressing. The band is (correctly) named as Roland Alfonso and The Studio One Orchestra, with a rather garbled version of the composer's name under the title.
Interestingly, this is the L-O-N-G un-edited version. There's a trombone solo on it, which doesn't appear on the UK release.
The other side has Bongo Man asking "Where Is Garvey", accompanied by Roland Alfonso and The Studio One Orchestra.
It plays very well although it does have a few light scuffs and storage marks. However, it has a "bump" in the pressing, where some small foreign body seems to have fallen into the vinyl mix during the pressing stage. What it is, I have no idea. It might be something I'd advise you not to smoke, or it might be a piece of the pressing engineer's beard, or a bit of his lunch. On my very good gear with the mono button pressed, it sails through perfectly. Remember, this is a 1964 Federal Records pressing made from used vinyl, fruitcake and old socks, so don't expect mirror-smooth surfaces ensuring sonic perfection. "Hazel" has written her name neatly in biro on the B side.
The music is, of course, wonderful.
I remember comedian "cheerful" Charlie Chester premiering this on a lunchtime BBC Radio show and pre-announcing it as "this is terrible.. it's all out of tune.. and this awful music is what the young people are dancing to". Then on came Count Sticky doing his "chicka chicka Guns Of Navarone! Hip! Hip!" intro and I thought it was one of the most wonderful things I'd ever heard. Sorry, cheerful Charlie.
Conditionwise it is rated by me and Mr Fuffy (my one-eyed assistant shipping clerk.. see photo) as a good honest VG or better.. but remember that "bump" in the vinyl (just about visible on the A side, and more visible on the B side).
You'll never find another at this wallet-friendly start price.
