This handsome 2LP box set – a still-sealed copy – from Deutsche Grammophon (415 959-1, German pressing, DDD stereo, full-size booklet and color catalog included) features Giuseppi Sinopoli's trenchent and transcendent reading of Mahler's Symphony No. 2 "Resurrection", recorded in warm and opulent sound in the ample acoustics of Watford Town Hall in September 1985 with the Philharmonia Orchestra and Chorus, soprano Rosalind Plowright, and mezzo-soprano Brigitte Fassbender.
Filling out the set is Fassbender's equally compelling account of Mahler's Lieder eines Fahrenden Gesellen, with Sinopoli and the Philharmonia providing beautifully shaded accompaniment throughout. This powerful Mahler Second Symphony was among the early successes of Sinopoli's towering Mahler cycle and is preserved in demonstration quality sound.
Sinopoli's untimely death in 2001 robbed the music world of one its finest and most charismatic musicians and he remains sorely missed. Sinopoli was a risk-taker and greatly divided opinion. His interpretations could sometimes veer to extremes, while at other times he exercized seemingly greater restraint – few conductors had a keener ear for orchestral balances or for maintaining the longest lines in building musical paragraphs. At his best, his performances evinced a powerful mind and searching musicality.
Also included is a full-size 12-page booklet with extensive notes on the music and complete vocal texts provided in German, French, and English.
CONDITION – PLEASE READ CAREFULLY:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the box is near-MINT. There is some discoloration and tiny tears to the shrinkwrap, but that is all. The box itself is like new – overall, a superb collector's copy.
The condition of the 2 LPs is MINT. These are still-sealed, unplayed copies – ideal collector's copies.
