This is one of several albums this artist created in the 1970s that now stand as a masterpiece of the acoustic blues genre. Johnny Shines began making records with an electric guitar and a full combo in the background in the mid-1960s; one of them was recorded according to confirmed reports without having had an instrument in hand for years. It seemed as if he had reinvented himself in the following decade, playing pristine and flawless pieces on the slide guitar complete with rhythmic, choppy and stimulating complex tempos. It was said that he had been a young buddy of Robert Johnson's and had soaked it all up without signing a deal with the devil. Shines was a stable, reliable, pious, and open-minded guy who lived in Tuscaloosa, AL. And had a permanent job as a construction foreman. Nice and extremely intellectual, he let all emotions run wild when he played a delta blues. Magic and sensibility were in both his fingertips and his voice, which sounds overwhelming here. The entry of Johnson's canon of songs into his repertoire, executed with an almost baroque attention to detail, amounted to a revelation.
