This remarkable cassette combines two of Sheffield Lab’s most famous sonic showcases, The Sheffield Drum Record and The Sheffield Track Record
The Sheffield Drum Record
The A side of this is the cassette version of "The Sheffield Drum Record" originally recorded live to the direct disc recording. Because of the sizable groove excursions needed to cut these high impact drum tracks, the album sides were limited to approximately 7 minutes per side. But what a ride! If you have heard this recording, you’ll know why it was called "the lease breaker!"
Doug Sax and his favorite engineer, Grammy Winner Bill Schnee mapped out a special plan make a drum demonstration record. They decided to record a different drummer for each side of the record for contrast, with each drummer performing a lengthy drum improvisation for maximum impact. They chose Ron Tutt, who had been Elvis’ Presley’s drummer for many years, as one drummer. The other drummer they choose was the legendary Jim Keltner who probably has recorded with a host of superstars including Bob Dylan, George Harrison, The Travelling Wilburys, and many more.
Each drummer spent one evening in Sheffield’s studio on the SONY Soundstage running through a series of improvisations approximately 7 minutes long.
In a direct disc recording session, each side of the album is cut onto a master lacquer live as the music is being played in the studio. Therefore, the entire album side must be performed without stopping the lathe. For the Drum Record, each drummer was asked to create a diverse drum improvisation to show off a variety of styles and sounds.
The Sheffield Track Record
Side B of this cassette is "The Sheffield Track Record."
The Track Record is comprised of 4 rock instrumentals designed for the highest sonic impact for system and component evaluation – and flat out fun The album created reactions of complete amazement. Harry Pearson of The Absolute Sound said "This is the greatest sounding rock recording ever." Stereophile Magazine said: " One of the most astonishing rock records ever issued!" This album was a follow-up to Sheffield’s own "Drum Record" demonstration and test disc, but on The Track Record a crack studio band played 4 rock instrumentals specifically designed to capture the instruments that are the core of rock music; the drum set, electric bass, guitar, and electric keyboard. These songs were record live to the direct disc master lacquers by Sheffield Lab, the pioneer in audiophile recording, and were mixed live by Grammy winning producer and engineer, Bill Schnee.

The musicians include keyboardist/composer James Newton Howard (later to record his own eponymous album for Sheffield Lab and now a highly in demand soundtrack composer;) keyboardist Robbie Buchanan; guitarist Michael Landau; bassist Nathan East (Eric Clapton, Foreplay, etc.;) drummer Carlos Vega, and percussionist Lenny Castro.
Notes
Sheffield Lab, formed by partners Lincoln Mayorga (pianist, and noted studio musician) and Doug Sax (mastering engineer) was launched in 1969 to make the definitive audiophile records. They eschewed multi-track tape and they recorded their vinyl albums direct to disc – full live performances recorded through a custom electronic chain.
