SEX PISTOLS 'GOD SAVE THE QUEEN / PRETTY VACANT' MEGA RARE 1984 STUDIO VERSIONS WITH VERY STRANGE 'SEX' LABELS AND SERATED GROOVE. PLEASE NOTE THIS IS SO RARE AND ONLY A HANDFUL WERE PRESSED, KNOWN TO BE IN EXISTENCE. THIS RECORD HAS BEEN MENTIONED IN DOMINIC PEDLER'S FORTHCOMING GOD SAVE THE QUEEN BOOK, WHICH I HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU PURCHASE NEXT YEAR.
THIS SAME RECORD SOLD FOR £242 IN JANUARY 2012. THE SELLERS STORY/LISTING IS AS FOLLOWS:
“It was late 1984, or early ‘85, and I was working for Virgin Games at 61/63 Portobello Road (now luxury flats) as a programmer and artist. We were friends with the Mayking Data company, a few doors down, which did cassette duplication for the video games industry but was also connected to vinyl records. One day, one of their guys walked in with a handful of these green-labelled singles, which he gave to three of us who were Sex Pistols fans. He explained that two different singles had gone through the pressing plant at the same time, and a small batch was mislabelled before anyone realised. It wasn’t clear if the mix-up was due to both records sharing a similar catalogue number, or because both had ‘Sex’ on the label! Our friend had grabbed a handful before the rest of the batch was destroyed. Assuming he kept one for himself, and one for his sidekick, I would guess there are five in existence.”
The ‘Pretty Vacant’ B side, and identical matrix markings, reveals this mystery disc to be the Sex Pack GSTQ in disguise. The MPO initials in the dead wax help us join the dots. For as well as occasionally manufacturing for Virgin during the CBS years, the French factory was the pressing partner for the London-based Mayking Records, founded by former Decca employee, Brian Bonnar. While the reason for this extraneous run of GSTQ discs remains a mystery, one can speculate that the label’s cryptic reference to “Identity Trade” was all part of a prank by a MPO factory insider.?
