Description

You are bidding on a rare Dutch (mint-never played) copy of the famous Sex Pistols' debut 45, "Anarchy In The U.K.", which became 'Sounds' magazine's single of the week and was released by EMI on 26 November 1976 in Holland.

On the evening of 1 December 1976, the Sex Pistols had the chance for an appearance on the local London TV show Thames Today presented by Bill Grundy. A drunken Grundy provoked the band and got corresponding answers with rude words and grimaces (transcript of the dialogue is available). Too much for a 'serious' London TV show and dumb TV-watchers, but enough to catch all the press-headlines the next day. Before the TV-show Punk was just 'bad' music, after it the media-theme for “Let’s get the Sex Pistols.

On 6 January 1977, Sir John Read, Chairman of the EMI Group, EMI released the following press statement: "The Sex Pistols incident, which started with a disagreeable interview given by this young group on Thames TV last week, has been followed by a vast amount of newspaper coverage in the last few days.

"Sex Pistols is a pop group devoted to a new form of music known as 'punk rock'. It was contracted for recording purposes by EMI Records Limited in October 1976 - an unknown group offering some promise, in the view of our recording executives, like many other pop groups of different kinds that we have signed. In this context, it must be remembered that the recording industry has signed many pop groups, initially controversial, who have in the fullness of time become wholly acceptable and contributed greatly to the development of modern music.”

"Sex Pistols have acquired a reputation for aggressive behaviour which they have certainly demonstrated in public. There is no excuse for this. Our recording company's experience of working with the group, however, is satisfactory.”

“Sex Pistols is the only 'punk rock' group that EMI Records currently has under direct recording contract and whether EMI does in fact release any more of their records will have to be very carefully considered. I need hardly add that we shall do everything we can to restrain their public behaviour, although this is a matter over which we have no real control.”

Sir John, and EMI didn't like the press coverage of the band’s Heathrow departure for a 5 day playing tour of Holland and decide to terminate the Pistols' contract. They also ordered all pressing plants to stop production of the "Anarchy" single and recall it immediately. Further reaction for the Pistols: they were banned from playing thirteen out of nineteen UK tour-dates, most commercial radio stations were refusing to play the Sex Pistols, record-chains stopped selling the single and at least EMI cancelled the contract with the band.

Rare Dutch EMI Pressing (mint-never played) Sex Pistols' debut 45, "Anarchy In The U.K” / B side “I Wanna Be Me”.
