from All Music: It's tempting to play the "What if?" game with acts like Severance & Cassidy, a New England folk duo whose self-released 1978 album has finally seen a CD reissue after more than three decades. Theirs was the kind of gentle, woody, acoustic singer/songwriter sound that was all the rage in the first half of the ‘70s, but was fast falling out of favor by the time Don Severance and Gary Cassidy got around to recording. If these songs had been unveiled about five years earlier, and if they were given a more pop-friendly production, they might have made a mainstream impact, but that doesn't seem to be what the duo was after anyway. According to the reissue's liner notes, Severance & Cassidy wanted to keep their career as grassroots as their sound, so the album was recorded with virtually no sonic adornments whatsoever; beyond an extra guitar on a couple of cuts, what you hear on these tracks is what you would have heard if you caught Severance & Cassidy at a folk club circa 1978. With their gently introspective lyrics, light, breezy feel, and hummable tunes, it's easy to imagine these songs -- all written by Severance except one -- cracking the Top 40 if they had syrupy Seals & Crofts-style arrangements and a pre-disco release date, but that's simply not the case. Instead, the low-key production mirrors the vibe of the material perfectly. These are songs meant to be trickled lightly into your ears on a solitary autumn afternoon, not blasted out of a car radio while speeding down the highway with the top down on a summer day, and that's exactly why they all work as well as they do.
LP is in excellent condition. Looks as if it was played once or twice.
