Album Review
Review by Vince Ripol, All Music Guide
Some one-hit wonders are too ridiculous to understand. In 1977, "Heaven on the 7th Floor" lifted Paul Nicholas into the Top Ten with its improbable elevator romance set to a disco-bubblegum hybrid that proved more satisfying in songs like Dan Hartman's "Instant Replay." Nicholas wisely replaced the clichéd plot device with "On the Strip"'s more credible celebration of teenage cruising, but that follow-up stalled at number 67, and he never recaptured his American audience. The rest of his album failed to get off the ground floor, although the unremarkable "Dancing With the Captain" and "Grandma's Party" became Top Ten hits in England. Any good taste demonstrated by the British chart failure of "Heaven on the 7th Floor" was negated by the Top 20 success of "Reggae Like It Used to be," in which Nicholas cemented his dilettante status with the absurd claim that "you can reggae Beethoven." Perhaps "Heaven on the 7th Floor" belongs on some sort of twisted Nuggets album, surrounded by other ludicrous '70s oddities like "Playground in My Mind" and "Oh Babe What Would You Say?" Until such a compilation surfaces, there's little reason to endure the majority of Paul Nicholas.
Biography
Paul Nicholas biography by Bruce Eder, All Music Guide
Few vocalists have gone through as many permutations in their career in popular music in the manner of Paul Nicholas. Best known as a singer, Nicholas began his career in professional music at the keyboard at age 19, playing piano with Screaming Lord Sutch and his backing band, the Savages, in 1964. He didn't remain with the band too long, however, choosing to give up playing full-time in favor of studying drama and developing his acting skills. Nicholas continued to record occasionally, but despite his access to early compositions by Pete Townshend ("Join My Gang") and David Bowie ("Over the Wall We Go"), he failed to chart a single with any of his work.
In 1968, Nicholas joined the British cast of the musical +Hair, which was brought to London in 1968 by Robert Stigwood in the lead role of Claude. The two years he spent in the part marked Nicholas's first time crossing paths professionally with the producer, and he was later cast in Stigwood's productions of +Jesus Christ, Superstar and +Grease. Nicholas also appeared in the rock-related movies Tommy, Lisztomania, and Stardust. Nicholas's extensive credits in Stigwood's productions and his resulting popularity inevitably led to his recording several singles for the producer's RSO Records, mostly in a disco-pop vein, but his success was largely confined to the stage, where he continued to earn leading roles in major productions, including +Barnum, +the Pirates of Penzance, +Jesus Christ, Superstar's 20th anniversary concert tour, and the 1995 production of +Singin' in the Rain. He also began working behind the scenes in theater during the 1990s, producing the 1993 West End revival of +Grease on behalf of the Stigwood organization.
- This record came from a record store called "Phantasmagoria" which was located in Allentown, Pennsylvania. Phantasmagoria went out of business in 1978. I purchased most of their unsold inventory some years later when I owned "Music Madness" - a new & used record store in Catasauqua.
- Phantasmagoria used round colored stickers to indicate the price of the albums. They had a sign on the wall with the color sticker combinations for the customers to use so they knew the price of the albums. Most of the albums still have these stickers on them, and in some rare cases, the stickers are written on. Some of the records have prices on them. This is the price you would have paid for the record in 1978 if you would have bought it at Phantasmagoria. Please don't confuse these prices with their current value.
- All sealed albums are being sold as collector's items and cannot be returned due to manufacturer's defects. It may be almost impossible to replace many of the sealed albums that I am selling.
- All pictures are of the exact item being sold. The pictures always supersede any written description of this item.
- I always leave feedback before your item ships. Please consider leaving feedback for me after you have had a chance to inspect and enjoy your purchase.
- Please avoid questions on the last day of the auction. I might not have enough time to give you an answer before the auction ends.
- All album reviews, credits and artist biographies are from AllMusic Guide. If you haven't been to their web site, you have to check it out. It's one of the most comprehensive music references on the internet. In some cases, credits may include reissue (CD) information. Obviously any credits referenced to CDs do not apply to this album release.
