STOMPIN' New Zealand's Beat Boom / Garage legends, Larry's Rebels once roamed the lands 'down under' in the mid to late 60's ... they made only album ("Study In Black") a killer $$$ beat/garage rock collectible -- then this lavish laminated 18 tracks overview shows up 20 years later featuring their cool 45rpm rarities and best tracks from that above mentioned album, plus a 7-inch 45 single ...all kickin' raw beat with melodious grooves not unlike the rawness & tunefulness of THE WHO in '66 '67 ....

Larry’s Rebels were New Zealand’s "Animals". The American's "Paul Revere and the Raiders." The top notch local pop band with bluesy bite who released a handful of killer discs and for a brief few years were all over the media, the charts and the bedroom walls of New Zealand’s teenagers.

They were Auckland’s first great home-grown band of the modern pop era; hard working and electrifying live. Their cover versions nipping at the heels of the originals. Few bands could re-bore Whatcha' Gonna Do About It better than The Rebels with Larry out front, strutting, preening, riding the snotty words for all they’re worth as a defiant howl of John Williams’ feedback dipped from one speaker to the other and sonic mayhem broke out. At the other end of the pop spectrum you’d be hard pressed to find a more poised ballad than the self-penned Dreamtime.

Some of the highlights include:

 It’s Not True, a crisp, clean, and powerful version of Pete Townsend’s Who original, Larry’s Rebels, the group, emerged for the first real time. Larry treading solid teen turf, sneering and protesting his innocence to a jaunty early white R&B rhythm. The spunk and spark that pushed It’s Not True into the New Zealand Top Ten in September 1966.

The Flying Scotsman  With its restless blues clatter and lonely howl harp banging down the main trunk line As The Rebels knew only too well. The song’s centre piece - a soaring psychedelic guitar rave up - has lessons in feedback and discord learnt from touring with two master guitarists (this was the Beck/ Page twin guitar Yardbirds).

There’s a lot of that mayhem in The Rebels’  - a manic take of the old Artwoods organ-driven I Feel Good.  It's better/ ballsier than the Artwoods original with a Who influence on the distorted feedback break. As well, all hell breaks loose on their rave up of The Small Faces’ What Cha Gonna Do ‘bout It.

Larry’s Rebels version of mod act The Creation’s Painter Man hit number six on the New Zealand charts, staying there for eight weeks.

For fans of the tougher Rebels’ sound, a hard driving version of The Easybeats’ I’ll Make You Happy is found on side one.

Coloured Flowers is another type song. The band wasn’t sure which way the pop scene was going in '67 and were experimenting with fuzz and wah-wah. They could play anything because of  experimenting with all sorts of sounds.

Halloween is a freaky piece of flower pop, and as well the hard bitten pop rock baroque ballad, Everybody’s Girl, which again placed Larry’s Rebels to the New Zealand charts in July 1968, climbing to number six.

 If you hear this LP you may well agree that this was one of New Zealand's finest psych/pop/freak beat bands. Their covers of Small Faces/Who/Creation songs are first grade and their own songs hold the same standard of standardness...
