ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This exceedingly rare LP from La Voix de son Maitre (FALP 576, French pressing, red/silver label – ED1, mono – no stereo edition exists, dowel spine) features conductor Carl Schuricht and l'Orchestre de la Société des Concerts du Conservatoire's rugged and Olympian account of Beethoven Symphony No. 7 in A Major Op. 92, recorded in the rich, spacous acoustics of the Salle Wagram, Paris, on 11 June 1957.
Note: This is really a fine copy. I have seen many copies sell on eBay and though I would not make any exaggerated claims, I cannot believe there are, as of 2012, many copies finer than this still out there – see the CONDITION section below.
These performances were not well received by The Gramophone when they first appeared in the late 1950s. The reviewers seemed more much concerned with a perceived lack of clean execution and imperfections in ensemble than with the overall impact of the music-making. It is difficult to fathom the uncharitable reviews Schuricht’s Beethoven received then, but this is one instance, of many, when collectors knew better and these readings are appreciated now.
There is a blazing conviction here that never falters, a rugged grandeur akin to Klemperer yet without the heaviness. Along with his VPO Bruckner Symphonies 3, 8, and 9, Schuricht's Beethoven Symphony cycle must count among the very finest things this visionary maestro ever did in the studio – it's fascinating and there's not another Beethoven cycle quite like it.
Incidentally, the striking cover photo of Schuricht was taken by Roger Hauert, while the fine liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket, provided in French only, were written by Jean Cotté.
CONDITION – PLEASE READ CAREFULLY:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is EXCELLENT++. There is slight bumping/wear at corners as well as mild discoloration, but that is all. There are no bends, seamplits, owners’ markings, or other defects, and the album remains pefectly solid and very handsome in appearance – overall, this rates as a lovely collector’s copy.
The condition of the dowel spine is near-MINT. Really, there are no flaws to speak of – some very mild discoloration, perhaps, but that is all. The dowel is perfectly intact and legible, there are no seamsplits, etc. Really, this rates as a very fine collector’s copy.
The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT Visually, there are no spindle trails at all and the surfaces retain a bright gloss. I will not say the surfaces are absolutely flawless, but really the playback is superb – a truly fine collector’s copy.
