History of this Album

While fans of surf rock -and of Jan & Dean- especially know the storied history of Save For A Rainy Day, I wanted to relay it in brief here, as it is worth telling. : )

"Save For A Rainy Day" was never made available to the general market as a wide release album, owing to preexisting contractual obligations between Jan Berry and Screen Gems. 

First Edition (first pressing) - J&D-101, November, 1966
Second Edition (second pressing) - March, 1967

Distribution of both of these pressings was halted due to breach of contract.

Columbia Records had acquired the master tapes for the album and had planned a wide release in both Mono and Stereo pressings (catalog and matrix numbers were issued for both), but this never came to pass.

It wasn't until 1996 that a true wide release was available -- a double-length vinyl issue on Sundazed Records.

In the intervening years, both Stereo acetate and a Japanese version of the release are known to have been sold, and both of which are considered among the rarest items in the surf rock genre.

These true, First Press issues of Save For A Rainy Day were sold only through Dean Torrence, and made it into the market in an extremely limited quantity -- Perhaps several hundred copies are known to exist.
