Saturnalia - "Magical Love" - Mega Rare Picture Disc - Matrix Records - With 28 page Booklet
Originally released in 1973, this record is considered to be the world's first 3D picture disc
Manufactured by Metronome in GMBH Germany
This release is sometimes incorrectly listed as having been released in 1969.
I have owned this record for many years and only ocasionally play it as I also have the CD
I think the music is very good of it's type but the design and packaging is a joy to behold.
The A side depicts members of the band semi-naked in full Satan worship mode holding flaming braziers
The B side however is magnificent depicting the twelve archetypes of Man,
six male, six female or rather mask versions of these after the writings of
Tammo de Jongh with reference to his book 'The Magic Circle' and Richard Gardner's 'The Purpose of Love'
It has to do with cosmology, the four elements and the writings of Carl Jung.
Interestingly, the cover of King Crimson's sophomor LP In The Wake Of Poseidon had the same characters on.
It's very beautifully photographed and realised. The masks themselves are credited to "The Cosmology Circle"
Inside the booklet it describes the B side as having "The Circle Of The Soul" as it's concept and
links the members of the band to them based on personal associations to do with the psyche and the soul rather than birthdays.
The majority of the text in the booklet is quoted from the writings of Tammo de Jongh.

The music is heavy guitar driven bluesy prog a bit like early Uriah Heep with nods to
The Pink Fairies and others of the London underground-not what was expected at the time.
I remember seeing these in the racks next to David Bowie's Aladdin Sane when they were both released.
The music was recorded at Island studios and produced by Keith Relf of The Yardbirds
The disc is in excellent condition and plays beautifully with hardly any hiss or crackle
often associated with picture discs let alone one of this vintage, in fact the music has a real power
and of course the record looks majestic as it spins around.
The booklet is in VG+ condition with no tears or writing and still tightly stapled but there is
a small crease or two to the top corner of the first 8 pages. The paper is satin finish and fairly heavy.
These don't appear very often and hardly ever with the booklet included. This is a real gem of a disc and unique of it's kind.
