A series of great  classical orchestral and instrumental performances by major conductors, composers and instrumentalists.

The limited issue collectors CONCERT HALL Society produced modern and unusual works with new performers, many from the West Coast in the Late 40s. Their 78 rpm records were pressed on a superior red vinyl record, and all issues were limited to 2000 or 3000 numbered copies with the artist signatures, and a hand-written numbershown in the back of the album:

The Sonata for Violoncello and Piano, Opus 6, by Samuel Barber is a sonata for cello and piano. It is in the key of C minor

The sonata was composed between June and December 1932 during a trip to Europe as Barber was finishing his studies at the Curtis Institute of Music. The score is dedicated to Barber's composition teacher, Rosario Scalero, and was officially premiered on 5 March 1933 with the composer at the piano and his friend and colleague Orlando Cole as cellist, at a concert of the League of Composers in New York City (Heyman 1992, 110–11, 114). Together with the Music for a Scene from Shelley, Op. 7, this sonata won both a Pulitzer travel stipend and the Prix de Rome of the American Academy in Rome in 1935 (Friedewald 1957, 166; Pleasants 1935).

Raya Garbousova's Debussy Sonata - a lost gem!

This wonderful recording of Debussy's 1915 Sonata for Cello and Piano is without doubt one of those lost gems we love to discover and remaster for Pristine Audio Direct. It is one of those rare occasions where the resources of both myself and Peter Harrison have been pooled to bring you the best possible sound quality from this recording.

Though information is scant, we believe the recording was originally made for 78rpm discs in the late 1940s, and was shortly afterwards transferred for vinyl issue.

Those with a good knowledge of cellists will need no introduction to Raya Garbousova (1909-97) - she was without doubt one of the foremost instrumentalists of her generation. Take a listen to our sample of the finale of this short sonata to get a taste of her full command of both her instrument and the music.

Born in Russia, she was a prodigy, playing in Moscow and Leningrad by the age of 15. The following year she went to Leipzig with the intention of studying there under Klengel. After a three-hour interview he declared that as she already knew everything she could not be his student! In the years which followed she was reponsible for many premières, including sonatas by Martinu and Prokofiev, and the Barber Concerto, commissioned and written for her.

Her accompanist here, Artur Balsam, features on a number of recordings available from Pristine Classical - the pairing here is exquisite.

[edit] BiographyHe studied in Lódz, making his debut there at the age of 12 then enrolled at the Berlin Hochschule fur Musik. In 1930 he obtained the prestigious Mendelssohn Prize. In 1932 he made a tour of the United States with Yehudi Menuhin. With the rise of the Nazis, Balsam settled in America, where he became a celebrated accompanist to well-known artists, including Henri Temianka, with whom he performed twice in 1945 at Carnegie Hall. He also played much chamber music and gave occasional solo recitals. He served on the faculties of the Eastman School of Music, Boston University, and the Manhattan School of Music.

The Grade (Excellent to Poor, I don't give Mint) refers to the WEAR of the record. Any other defects are stated separately

When I listen to a record, I may also give it an aural grade (again E to P), and make a SUBJECTIVE judgment of the pressing quality for hiss and surface noise.
"SUPERQUIET" is basically noiseless, like a vinyl pressing.
"VERY QUIET" is an exceptionally quiet record for a given pressing.
"Quiet" is a record that is a great example without undue noise for a give pressing.

These judgments are SUBJECTIVE and will depend one the styli, phonograph etc. you use on your own equipment.

Records will be packed safely between corrugated cardboard in a sturdy box with plenty of padding for safe shipment.

Shipment is usually Media Mail, unless you request another service. Shipping is at your risk, I will be happy to insure items at your cost.
