Saigon Soul Revival - Hoa Am Xura

Ho Chi Minh City-based band Saigon Soul Revival has been bringing pre-1975 Saigon alternative music back to the stage with their live performances since 2016. They honor the original composers, singers and the golden era this music (Nh?c Vàng) hails from while using new arrangements and renditions of ancient Vietnamese songs. With tight grooves, psychedelic textures and a powerful, unique sound, SSR has racked up countless performances at various venues across Vietnam. In 2017, they also participated in the nationally known TV format "Ban Nh?c Vi?t" (known in the west as "The Band") and accompanied live the two release tours for the Saigon Supersound compilation releases.

With support from the *British Council's FAMLAB Fund Initiative, they began creating their own compositions in the same vein for their debut album H?a Âm X?a, produced by Jan Hagenkötter and released on the Saigon Supersound Imprint in 2019. The album was recorded in Vietnam, with additional guests such as the famous (before 1975) Vietnamese singer Mai L? Huy?n and the currently very popular Saigonese rapper "Blacka" (2022 finalist of Vietnam's most successful
TV show "Rap Vi?t") to combine the old sound with the new sound of Saigon. Some compositions contain traditional Vietnamese instruments such as the ?àn Nguy?t or the ?àn Tranh & ?àn B?u, played by the famous traditionally trained musician Th? H?i Ph??ng is played on the album. This fusion sets it apart from the original recordings of the '60s and '70s and has resulted in a unique and contemporary sound. Their debut album "Hoa Am Xua" is an international success. Among many other media reports it was nominated for the SONGLINES MUSIC AWARDS 2021 in the UK and received massive radio airplay from Iggy Pop on his BBC Radio Show amongst others, as well as rotations on Radio FIP in France.

All members of the band are of Vietnamese origin or have a strong connection to Vietnamese culture and heritage through loved ones and their time spent in the country. Her music focuses on compositions that blend Vietnamese lyrics and sounds with influences from western rock, soul, bolero, tango and other popular genres of the time, most of which were banned after the war. This project seeks to revitalize this beautiful musical heritage of Vietnam, which is an important cultural bridge between East and West.
