British oddball punks Swell Maps get their three John Peel sessions from 1978-80 bundled together on The John Peel Sessions, catching the band at their most gloriously homemade and half-unbuttoned. 'International Rescue' tears off on twitchy punk momentum and 'Read About Seymour' remains a tiny masterpiece of cheerful disarray. By 'Vertical Slum/Forest Fire', horns and krautrock repetition are already poking holes through the walls and the 1980 session grows stranger again. Scrappy, funny, forever one loose screw from collapse which is pretty much the ideal Swell Maps condition.
