SUSO SAIZ - PREFIERO EL NARANJA
LP released on Linterna Musica, Madrid, Spain, 1984
‘Prefiero El Naranja’ is Suso Saiz’s first solo LP he released while still a member of Orquesta De Las Nubes trio with singer Maria Villa and percussionist Pedro Estevan. Born 1957, Saiz studied with Spanish avantgarde composer Luis De Pablo during the 1970s, before turning to more ambient projects like the Orquestra, whose ethnic-ambient music is similar to that of Jorge Reyes (1952-2009), for instance. ‘Prefiero El Naranja’ (I Prefer The Orange) is a collection of ambient guitar vignettes with lush, beautiful guitar sounds and effects, part-krautrock, part-The Durutti Column, say. Dreamy melodies are kept entertaining thanks to a high level of sound crafting and rich guitar sounds. A few synth loops also appear here and there for appropriate mid-1980s mood. The simplicity of these melodies grows on you after a while, like with other tenants of the ‘naive school’ (Klimperei, Harald Ziegler, Roedelius).
