A SPECIAL NOTE: At first glance, this could appear as a standard UK issue of this classic Supertramp album. But no, this is a rare and elusive Supercut audiophile pressing mastered and pressed by Nimbus Records exclusively for readers of Hi-fi magazines Practical Hi-fi and Hi-fi Today in the early 1980s. A small few others artists had one-off albums made by Nimbus in this series that include The Beatles, Wings, Rickie Lee Jones, Jackson Browne, Joan Armatrading, The Eagles and Pink Floyd (amongst a few others). The company mastered each release from the original master tapes using the best available mastering processes and the discs were pressed on the highest quality, purest vinyl available. Every album had it’s own unique sound, thus all are highly sort-after and collectable. This is no different and this hardly-played copy offers sublime sound that leads you directly into the recording studio – that is what they fully intended to do. Readers of these specialist magazines were not casual listeners, far from it, and these records (as I clearly remember) were quite expensive back in the day – far beyond what average listeners were prepared to pay. They were strictly limited, few were made and only briefly available. Buyers were largely those prepared to spend a vast sums for ultimate hi-fi equipment to glean every last possible fragment of information from the source. And all audiophiles know the beginning of the hi-fi chain starts with the record itself. As soon as I heard the first few seconds of this record, it was apparent there was real bass in the mix and the vocals are simply breathtaking. Also the near total lack of surface noise – the merest trace at the start, exactly the same as the last one of these I offered – but barely anything else thereafter – such a shame all records were not pressed up to this standard. The difference has to lie in the lack of mass production – these were strictly limited pressings and made with utmost care and precision for the discerning listener. In fact within the audiophile and audiophile super pressing market, these are amongst the rarest ever made – and arguably the very best too – equally as good, if not even better than Mobile Fidelity – both are fantastic needless to say. Be clear: this album was superbly produced even as a standard mass-produced copy, but sometimes pressing quality could be variable, these Nimbus ‘supercut’ copies were the Rolls Royce of vinyl records and were bought with utmost confidence to deliver. To fully appeciate the difference, they are best enjoyed on top quality equipment and few collectors and fans of this famous artist will be disappointed. These Nimbus supercut albums are hard to find and are seldom seen or offered – do not miss this marvellous album.

Label Conditions: Both look practically as-made with barely a spindle trace to be seen. Ultra fresh, clean and attractive. Appearing hardly played, but always fully checked as usual.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 115 grams. Quite light, five grams heavier than my last and only other copy I have seen. These were always pressed on the purest vinyl.

Rarity: The actual title itself is common, a big-seller and mass-produced, so a great choice for the ‘Supercut’ market, these pressings are somewhat special and significantly rarer. This magnificent pressing of this classic title is a ‘Supercut’ edition, mastered and pressed exclusively for Practical Hi-Hi magazine by Nimbus Records. This is one of the most astonishing high-fidelity records I have ever heard from a record of this genre. Beautiful sound that takes you into the recording studio itself. Close to flawless sound with barely anything unwanted – there merest hint of contact sound at the very start, but little else thereafter – this record offers immense sound that the standard issues can rarely hope to match. What a joy, even privilege it is to hear such a wonderful recording. This is what high fidelity sound is all about – every instrument can be heard with amazing clarity, richness and depth. This famous old hi-fi magazine would have never put its name on a record that would fail to deliver, and this excels in every department. These offer absolute focus and clarity throughout, and this appears hardly used. A shame all records were not cut to this standard, but these were clearly made at a cost. The cover is impressive as well, the ‘Supercut’ Nimbus logo is embossed and printed to the cover’s surface in gold as seen in close-up, the unsplit lyric inner sleeve is also included. Sometimes the company used stickers, but this one is actually printed on. These records were mail order items only, they were not sold in shops. A very special pressing for a very special album and band – DO NOT LOSE THIS ONE.

Run-Out Groove Etchings: ‘NIMBUS ENGLAND’ on both sides [this in tiny machine punched type]. This detail is crucial as proof of the record being the genuine Nimbus pressing, thus after a number of attempts, I got a decent picture to show this important text. There are other initials and etch marks as well.

Musicians: Rick Davies – keyboards, vocals, harmonica; John Helliwell – saxophones, vocals, woodwinds; Roger Hodgson – guitars, keyboards, vocals; Bob Siebenberg – drums, percussion; Dougie Thomson – bass. With: Slyde Hyde – trombone, tuba.

Brief Info: A massively popular, award winning album – beautifully produced with audiophile standard sound, it became one of their most popular issues. This super-fidelity pressing will never be beaten for detail, dyanamic range and delivery of the content.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): little else to fault bar a tiny dink crease on the bottom left corner tip. An unlaminated single format that has a lovely semi-gloss sheen in manufacture. This unique Nimbus ‘Supercut’ edition has the logo embossed printed in gold to the front right area as seen. Printed and made in England by Gothic Press, includes the graphic/lyric inner sleeve. Some covers in this series had stickers for the ‘Supercut’ information, but this one actually printed.

Cover Front: A tiny dink on the bottom left corner as stated above, any other marks or blemishes gentle and faint as seen under angled light. Still very clean, fresh and attractive.

Cover Back: The same tiny tip crease, little else to really fault.

Top Edge: Straight with barely any wear. Being a mail-order item, some of these covers got split from record movement – this one has avoided such issues.

Bottom Edge: A little light very patchy rubbing.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly very sharp with minimal hint of wear or burring – any traces seen veiwed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with any compression little and light. The text practically unworn and well centred on a narrow depth.

Corners: Any corner wear or rubbing little and light, as stated a small crease on the bottom left. That the only evidence of a minor dink – possibly in transit as these were mail-order only.

Cover Summary: Clean and attractive with little to fault, this rare Nimbus cover variant should please many, if not most collectors.

The Lyric/Graphic Inner Sleeve: MINT(–): an unlined thicker paper lyric inner sleeve that looks almost as made. Clean, fresh with no edge splits or repairs, the one previous owner put a soft lined inner sleeve inside which will remain there. There merest hint of the corner crease when viewed right up close.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: MINT(–): a superb visual copy of this classic title. Very clean with superb shine and quite solidly pressed. Any surface traces are ultra fine, bordering on minuscule as seen critically under my very bright grading lamp. No stylus marks or penetrating scratches, this is practically as-made. Be clear: most who shelled-out quite considerable asking prices for these when issued, were rarely, if ever casual listeners. Mostly careful audio purists who wanted teh very best sound source available for their favourite albums. These were treasured and well looked after. A gorgeous record that should please most-all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This magnificent ‘Supercut’ audiophile pressed record plays up to it’s high visual grading (and beyond) with hardly anything to fault – this is close to sound perfection. Along with Mobile Fidelity and a few others, these records set the benchmark in audio excellence. Some who know me think I am fussy – good – I take it as a compliment. After hearing pressings like this, it puts many others to shame, that’s a fact. This offers strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is immense (and I mean ASTONISHING!) with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Pure, natural, dynamic analogue sound that is unlikely to be matched or beaten, especially by a standard mass-produced shop copy. Nimbus are famed for their classical records and the company have excelled with this one, pressing this ‘rock’ album to the same demanding standards. The only contact trace I heard (just), at the very beginning, light, very brief and disappearing proving can anything ever be truly ‘perfect’? These Nimbus pressings deserve their high reputation, that is why they are so sort-after. This made my LP12 source system excel, to say I enjoyed this record would be something of any understatement. Both channels are clean and sharp, focused and precise with ultimate fine detail – also that lovely extended bass, this has all the warmth and realism of a live performance. Clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this rock classic, effortless easy tracking for its entirety*. I have several standard copies with unwanted crackle and noise, this audiophile pressing will prove immensely difficult to find better and is strongly. Not quite ‘pristine’, but in the real world, almost as good as it gets and these are not offered often. Audiophile collectors and listeners – PLEASE APPLY.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
