Description

This is the first record made  by Sunny Murray on ESP Disk under his own name, he had appeared on ESP Disk 1002 "Spiritual Unity" with Albert Ayler and Gary Peacock, and on ESP Disk 1016 with "The New York Eye and Ear Control" featuring Albert Ayler and Don Cherry in 1965, but on this one he is the leader. The line up on this album is:
Jacques Coursil                                  trumpet Jack Graham                                      alto sax Byard Lancaster                                 alto sax Sunny Murray                                    percussion Alan Silva                                          bass
As a drummer Sunny Murray used a very basic kit; cymbals, snare, bass drum and hi-hat, taking the drums out of the usual time keeping roll producing layers of percussive sound that ebbed and flowed between continuous cymbal and tripping snare runs. No longer subordinate to, but rather equal to the other instruments in creating the overall texture of the music. This record was also the recording debut for French trumpeter Jacques Coursil. There is a definite channel separation in some parts of the record of Coursil's trumpet and the two altos which enhances the effect of those instruments. Three of the tracks are Sunny Murray compositions and one is credited to Jacques Coursil. I bought this record new from an import shop in Melbourne in the late sixties and  taped it on reel to reel. It has only been played a few times since, most recently just before listing. It is the original 1966 US pressing, The matrix/run out for side A is ORT-Z DBH (framed in a square) ESPS 1032A and side B ORT-Z DBH (framed in a square) ESPS 1032B (refer discogs). The vinyl on both sides is clean and shiny but there are a few minor scuffs, and on side one there is a mark, which I put down to putting it back years ago into the paper cover after cleaning, before the cleaning liquid was properly dry(see photo 7) this does not effect the playing. I have discarded the original paper cover and replaced it with a new plastic one. There is some low level surface noise on the run in tracks and between the tracks but this is masked while the music is playing, I have graded the record as VG- because of the appearance rather than the sound. The cover is a thick cardboard and there is a small mark on the bottom right hand corner and some fraying in this corner. but overall the cover is still rigid with no splits or tears and the spine is intact and can be easily read in the shelf. The front has a low gloss sheen and the back is a matte finish, there is some yellowing on the back cover around the opening and the edges from years of storage.
