Original 1979 release.
NB: The 12 Sun Ra Lps I'm putting on ebay this week are all genuine original el Saturn releases, with hand-made sleeves and labels, and all bought personally by me from the Arkestra. Check my feedback for bona fides.
Don't be misled into thinking this is a 'boot'. Saturn was Sun Ra's own label, and his collective used to publish these sides themselves and sell them at the front of stage at gigs. This is one of several I am presenting on ebay this week (Check out my other items!), all from my private collection, and garnered by me at gigs in NY in the early 80's. Some of the vinyl can be visually dodgy, but if there is any problem with the sound quality I will indicate. Similarly, the sleeves are sometimes scrappy, even scribbled on, but this is how they were originally made by the band (some of whom were obviously not so hot at art). None have been played more than once since purchase so all clicks and crackles are inherent in the recording or pressing or subsequent handling by the band.
Condition: Plain sleeve, with pasted picture.
Record looks EX. .Plays fine. Slightest crackle. ( Sun Ra straying into funk, especially on UFO. One of my personal favourites, maybe because I saw them play it live in a NY disco)

Sun Ra was one of the most unusual musicians in the history of jazz, and arguably the most eccentric. At the same time he was one of the most singular of all bandleaders. Part of his singularity lies in the fact that despite his relatively marginal earning capacity owed to the generally “outside” nature of his music, he was able to keep a core of exceptional and controversial musicians traveling and even living commune-style with him for decades. Portraying himself as a product of outer space, he “traveled the spaceways” with a colorful troupe of musicians. They often used unusual instrumentation (from a tree drum to Ra’s celeste) and combinations of instruments. Sun Ra’s book ranged from Fletcher Henderson swing to free jazz.
Sun Ra, though he enjoyed cloaking his origins and development in mystery, is known to have studied piano early on with Lula Randolph in Washington, DC. His first noted professional job was during 1946-47 as pianist with the Fletcher Henderson Orchestra at the Club DeLisa on the South Side of Chicago. In addition to playing piano in the band he also served as one of the staff arrangers. From that point on, for all intents and purposes Sun Ra spent the rest of his playing days up until his passing as a bandleader. His first band was the Myth-Science Orchestra, which began in the early 1950s in Chicago. This was also when Ra began issuing recordings of his unusual music on his own Saturn label. He became one of the first jazz musicians to record and sell his own albums. Another of Sun Ra’s pioneering efforts was his early use of electronic keyboards, beginning as early as 1956, when he employed an electric piano, and including clavioline, celeste, and synthesizers.
Sun Ra marketed his plain-white-wrapper El Saturn recordings at his performances.
