"This is a spontaneous number which came to me in a flash," wrote composer and pianist Sun Ra of his tune "Call for all Demons" (featured) in the liner notes. "It paints a picture of a faraway thought. I like to think it is a Grecian thought, interspersed with the truths hidden in fairy tales and ancient mythology." Originally released in 1957 as Jazz by Sun Ra on Transition Records, Sun Song presents some of the Ra's earliest recordings.

This essential title is also available under the moniker of Sun Song (1956). Regardless of name, this long-player contains some of Sun Ra's most complex, yet accessible efforts. Ra had been an active performer since the late 1940s, recording with his various combos or "Arkestra(s)" as Ra dubbed them. Since this was the first widely distributed platter that the artist cut, it is often erroneously referred to as his debut. The tracks were documented by then-unknown Tom Wilson. If the name rings a bell, it may be because Wilson would go on to produce such rock luminaries as Frank Zappa, Simon and Garfunkel, Bob Dylan, and the Velvet Underground, among others. Ra's highly arithmetical approach to bop was initially discounted by noted jazz critic Nat Hentoff as "repetitious," with phrases "built merely on riffs with little development." In retrospect, however, it is obvious there is much more going on here. Among the musical innovations woven into the up-tempo "Brainville" and "Transition," are advanced time signatures coupled with harmonic scales based on Ra's mathematical equations. Not to be missed is the lush elegance within the delicate, if not intricate arrangements heard on "Possession," as well as the equally involved "Sun Song" -- both of which take on an air of sophistication in their deceptive simplicity. Ra's original LP jacket comments can be found within the liner notes of the Sun Song compact disc. This is noteworthy as one of the rare occasions that Sun Ra sought to explain not only his influences, but his methods of composition and modes of execution as well. As referred to above, Jazz by Sun Ra is arguably the most accessible work in the Sun Ra catalog, as well as one of the most thoroughly and repeatedly listenable.

 (IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VG+(+). A few light abrasions (probably just sleeve scuffs inflicted in storage over the years) ARE VISIBLE, but they appear fairly  insignificant relative to the overall condition of the vinyl, and are only moderately visually distracting. For most part, the vinyl looks impeccable, without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record plays beautifully,  probably one whole grade above its visual grade, with only a light and tolerable surface noice and very rare and few clicks and pops, typically during the intro groove (lip) of the record and during the break passages in between the tracks. The sound is incredibly resonant, booming and well-defined, warm, glowing and all-encompassing, apparently recorded in a major-label studio  (we suspect Columbia's) rather than home studio. The unheralded heroes of the proceedings are John Gilmore's tenor sax and tympani, both of which feel more like an earthquake than like conventional musical instruments. The record plays without any distortion whatsoever and with beautiful frequency and dynamic range throughout.

(c)           In the best tradition of Transition records (which used shoddily-glued labels), one of the labels on the record (side 2) has fallen off and is missing; the label on side 1 is complete and present.

(d)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(e)           This is the original flat-edge pressing

(f)            Stereo copies of this album are NOT known to exist.

(g)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER (THIS IS THE ORIGINAL, LAMINATED, GLOSSY COVER):

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has all three seams (top, bottom and spine) partially split; the previous owner taped all three sides with 1-inch black packaging tape which beautifully mimics the color and  texture of the back cover slick

-         Minor shelf wear noted on the opening side (nothing significant)

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine (nothing significant)

-         Cover has a small quality control (inspection) stamp on the FRONT panel  (the stamp is on laminated surface and we suspect it can be easily erased or wiped off)

-         The laminated cover has a few air 'bubbles' and wrinkles in lamination (this is a common problem with most laminated 50’s and 60’s covers

-         Back cover has a small sticker /label which advertises the booklet inside (which is missing); we consider the sticker to be an integral part of the cover artwork

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No ring wear

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No dirt/dust rubbing stains (friction marks caused by rubbing against other covers)

-        No yellowing from aging

-        No writing

-        No peel-off marks

-        No stains

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels (except for the booklet ad sticker)

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
