HERE WE HAVE AN EXCELLENT, UK A&M (AMLS 994) FIRST PRESSING (October 1970) OF "Just A Collection Of Antiques And Curios", STRAWBS' OUTSTANDING LIVE LP RECORDED AT LONDON'S QUEEN ELIZABETH HALL IN JULY 1970 AND PRODUCED BY TONY VISCONTI

THE RECORD IS PRESSED ON WHAT APPEARS TO BE NORMAL BLACK VINYL BUT WHICH WHEN HELD UP TO THE LIGHT REVEALS ITS TRUE DEEP RED COLOUR - A CHARACTERISTIC OF EARLY 1970s PYE PRESSINGS

THIS COPY IS THE RAREST EARLIEST PRESSING WITH THE BACK OF THE SLEEVE SHOWING THE BAND, ALL DRESSED IN BLACK, IN A MOODY 'BEATLE-ESQUE' POSE (Apparently their faces were thought to be too green in the picture, so later copies substituted a picture of the band in a pub enjoying a pint round a table)
THIS FIRST SLEEVE WAS ALMOST IMMEDIATELY WITHDRAWN AND ONLY ABOUT A 1,000 COPIES ARE THOUGHT TO EXIST

THE LP HAS THE FIRST ISSUE MUSTARD A&M LABELS

AND IS HOUSED IN THE RARE ORIGINAL OUTER LAMINATED AND DEEPLY GLOSSY GATEFOLD SLEEVE WITH INTERNALLY PRINTED LYRICS

This LP finds Strawbs at a transitional point in their career and it bridges the gap between the acoustic combo of their first incarnation and the harder, more strident folk-rock stylings that followed on 'From the Witchwood', with hints of progressive leanings.
This album, cut live at London's Queen Elizabeth Hall on July 11th, 1970 also gave Rick Wakeman his first front-page coverage in the music press, owing to his bravura performance on the solo piano spot, "Temperament for a Mind."
The finale, the rocking, searing nine-minute epic "Where Is the Dream of Your Youth," clearly shows where the band are heading and the sound throughout is excellent, as one might expect since Tony Visconti returned to the original concert recordings, with rich detail - especially the robust presence of John Ford's tremendous bass playing.
Although this album was recorded live, none of the tracks on the original vinyl pressing were released on any studio album except for "Where is This Dream of Your Youth", originally released as a track on the studio album 'Strawbs'

LABELS: The labels are CLEAN and BRIGHT with only light spindle evident when angled under a bright light. The original owner has initialed the labels (please see photographs) - this may clean off but I will leave that up to you
VINYL Visual: The vinyl still retains its DEEP, GLOSSY SHEEN. There are some superficial surface marks but these have NO major audio consequence. When held up to the light the DEEP RED nature of this pressing is clearly evident (I apologise for the poor photograph of the vinyl colour but I found it very difficult to capture as the camera has to be pointed directly into the light)
VINYL Audio: TREMENDOUS, CRYSTAL CLEAR, DEEP, RICH audio reproduction. There are NO jumps, NO sticks, NO scratches and only a light touch of surface noise during some (not all) of the quieter sections and a brief (split second) ONE REVOLUTION patch of interference at the beginning of Side Two. Otherwise, the LP plays to a very high standard with GREAT CLARITY, NO groove-wear and NO distortion and must be critically graded an EXCELLENT for audio. THIS REALLY IS A SUPERB LP - TREMENDOUSLY ATMOSPHERIC AND ONE OF STRAWBS' FINEST - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. NOT over-graded in ANY way as I use strict RECORD COLLECTOR grading standards (please refer to my feedback and 'about me' page)
SLEEVE: The 1st issue (rare variant) sleeve is in EXCELLENT condition - CLEAN and BRIGHT. The spine displays all text CLEAR and BOLD with only one or two light creases and the edges are nice and SHARP with virtually NO wear at all. The outer LAMINATED surfaces are clean with a DEEP GLOSS and only light storage rubbing. The inside of the gatefold has a couple of (very) small patches of paper loss (please see photos) but overall, a BEAUTIFUL SLEEVE and rare as the very first issue with the withdrawn back cover photo
