On each occasion that I have attended a Stokely Carmichael speech, any number of persons who were in the audience have complained to me after wards that the words from his mouth might drive the "masses" to some kind of terrible, and perhaps suicidal, action. Unable to accuse him of untruth, it is their way of establishing his "irresponsibility." But it seems never to occur to these critics, who are usually ill-equipped for either seeing or hearing how easily one detects that they lack sincere concern for the masses of their brothers. Their fear, too often, is that the "masses" might perform an action so revolutionary that it would change forever the face of an America in which one who opposes the tyranny of the white man in pose, while in fact living the life of a coward, is called "responsible." Which is to say that where hypocrisy in America is concerned, there has been full integration. And Stokely Carmichael has a way of disturbing black hypocrites.

Significantly, this Carmichael talk was given on the occasion of a birthday celebration for the jailed Huey P. Newton, the Black Panther Party's Minister of Defense, who already in his young life has set an example in courage and dignity that has inspired a generation. And at the heart of Carmichael's words is an appeal, the urgency of which we would do well to recognize: Black people who have made a peace with the cowardly existence of the slave (commonly referred to as "making it") must come together with blacks who are filled with the spirit of Huey Newton.

We are talking about the survival of a race of people. That is all that is at stake," says Brother Stokely, wisely. Almost a decade has passed since Stokely Carmichael, then a Howard University philosophy student, became involved in the Movement. It is no coincidence that his personal movement from organizing in the rural South to giving authentic voice to the Third World struggle for liberation has paralleled the Afro-American community's development as a politically sophisticated people. As James Baldwin wrote several years ago in The Fire Next Time, "The only thing white people have that black people should want, is power-and no one holds power forever." And before Baldwin, others had spoken. But for various reasons. legitimacy for the term Black Power was delayed until Black People heard the voice of Stokely Carmichael.

Before Carmichael, Black People in America refused to recognize that power has never been the product of the good will of the powerful. And now, in this talk, Stokely speaks to Black People about the need to forge a strong unity with which to engage in the power struggle. And his voice, once again, is one that Black People must hear. When he speaks about the vote, the poverty program, the educational system, and the need to recognize the fundamental differences between the problems of poor whites and the problems of poor Blacks, it is no exercise in putting whitey down. It is, instead, a rising up of our consciousness.

What is more responsible, or rational, than a Black Man calling attention to the very phenomena that will, if we persist in the enjoyment of unconsciousness, make of our children heirs to this burden of the powerlessness we have so long suffered? If one's frame of reference is Black, the implications of this country's "majority rule" game must be viewed as insidious. Can the same Congress concerning the humanity (rights) of Black People actually guarantee freedom for this same people? Stokely Carmichael knows that when Black people speak of the Constitution and the progress of other minority groups in America, they have a tendency to forget that at no time in the history of this country have white Americans as a group given evidence that they will someday recognize Black people as human beings with full dignity.

Thus, Stokely is correct in suggesting that we are battling for survival. Concentration camps and extermination are possibilities that will surely not be avoided by a dependence on (or faith in) the morality of the white republic. In other cultures such atrocities. have been conceived of, to be certain, as "moral" solutions. The need for Black People, as Stokely points out, is fastly disappearing in this age of Apollo 12, Apollo 13, and so on. Black People must try to imagine what is the most logical solution to an unwanted people problem in a society that holds sacred no value that does not in some way military-oriented, technological superiority. --- David Lorens
