What we figure went over/under the radar of music collectors professional reviewer has understood it either) is that Life In a Tin Can is a concept album about a man named Johnny Bride who was imprisoned for a murder he didn't commit, escaped, lived as a fugitive acroos the USA, and was finally exonerated when the real killer confessed to the crime. I loved the album the first time I heard it, and on my second listening, I picked up on the concept. I thought I may have been reading too much into it until my view was validated years later when I found a snippet of a Maurice Gibb interview on line (from just before the album's release) in which he said it was a concept album). The Bee Gees had explored their country and folk roots occasionally on earlier albums, but this time they went deeper into that direction.
Track by track:
1. Saw a New Morning - Just before he is to face the firing squad, the prisoner, with the help of some friends, narrowly escapes with his life ("I hear the sound of a snubnose behind me") .
2. I Don't Wanna Be the One - Now living the life of a fugitive, the escapee, Johnny Bride, reminisces about his lost love with whom he hopes to be reunited.
3. South Dakota Morning - Still on the lam, he's traveling from state to state, now in South Dakota.
4. Living In Chicago - Still running from the law, he's now living where the song title says.
5. While I Play - Making reference to traveling "across the USA", he's making the best of a bad situation and looking forward to winning out over the injustice that was done to him. (This is the hardest rocking song on the album, with a country touch, featuring the late Rik Grech (of Blind Faith) on violin/fiddle.)
6. My Life Has Been a Song - One of Robin Gibb's most beautiful vocals. The fugitive is again reminiscing about happier times with his lost love.
7. Come Home, Johnny Bride - He's tired of running, and ends up " in a swamp face down in the mud", but when they finally find him, they give him the good news that his name has been cleared because the real killer has confessed to the crime.
8. Method To My Madness - Now that he is living as a free citizen again, he is finding it difficult to readjust, but there's hope.

Maybe the Bee Gees should have given the album a title that would make the concept clearer or provided commentary liner notes on the songs, but this review might encourage the people to listen for the first time, or, again with new ears. It contains some of their best melodies and lyrics, but unfortunately it was wasn't a success. However, it remains an underrated true lost classic. As for those who complain of its 8 songs and 33-minute length, many albums have only 8 songs and many clock in at less than a half-hour. Quality matters more than quantity, and this album is quality throughout, with no filler added simply to make it longer. One of the great LOST Bee Gees albums of early '70s.

                 CONDITION: rated: STILL FACTORY SEALED! NEVER OPENED / NEVER PLAYED from 46 years ago ~~ housed in the original die-cut custom gatefold "pop-top" cover. There are no delete marks, no split seams, no writing and no bends other than a real tiny left corner bump that may be insignificant, but as a minor issue, is there. ORIGINAL store price sticker on outside of the outer cellophane.
