Description

Thank you for your interest in my items.
You are biding on a RARE AUSTRALIAN released 7" 45rpm vinyl record.

"EVIE [PART 1]" b/w "EVIE [PARTS 2 & 3" by STEVIE WRIGHT [EASYBEATS].

Released in 1974.

Track selection is:-
A-Side. "Evie [Part 1]" (Vanda/Young) 3:55 minutes.
B-Side. "Evie [Parts 2 & 3]" (Vanda/Young) 5:55 minutes.

The record was released by EMI RECORDS AUSTRALIA.
Catalogue number AP-10468.

Given this release is now over forty years old it is very hard to find nowadays in any condition.  I bought this upon release and it has been in my collection ever since, one of my favourites, but it is time to cull the collection, so hopefully there is another fan out there who will treasure it.

Vinyl record is in EX condition on the A-side, VG+ condition on the B-side due to background crackle & a couple of clicks during the softer Part 2 section, this is blown away when Part 3 starts and still sounds great.

Cover is a generic EMI Records red & tan paper sleeve.

Labels are in excellent condition, nice and clean, silver lettering on a black background.

See scans attached for further details.

BACKGROUND DETAILS

In 1973 Harry Vanda and George Young returned to Australia from the UK.

Stevie Wright had found life difficult since the Easybeats disbanded and had developed a heroin addiction.

"Stevie was still a great performer, still a great singer," Young says. "So Harry and I got to work to see if we could come up with something that could put him back in the charts."

Vanda and Young signed Stevie Wright and began working on the Hard Road album together.

The song features Malcolm Young of AC/DC on guitar. Young plays the guitar solo in Part One, while the solo in Part Three is played by Harry Vanda.

"Evie" is a classic Australian rock song released as a single in 1974 by Australian singer and former front-man of The Easybeats.  It was written by his former bandmates Harry Vanda and George Young.

It has been suggested that it was the first 11-minute song to chart at #1 anywhere in the world.

The song features three parts and some critics consider it as one of the most perfect rock n' roll songs ever, encapsulating the three basic themes of all love songs:

  • (I) Baby it'll be great once we're together (Let Your Hair Hang Down)
  • (II) Baby, it's so great now that we're together (Oh Evie... I'm nothing without you)
  • (III) Baby, it's so bad since you left me (I'm Losing You). However, the loss in this case is more tragic than the usual "boy loses girl" scenario - it describes the singer's emotions following Evie's death in childbirth.

Part One is a guitar driven, hard rocking and bluesy, swaggering song.

Part Two is more piano and string based, a much softer emotional ballad style.

Part Three is more of a disco-rock style, quicker, relatively urgent and guitar driven with a great vocal.

Personnel

Stevie Wright - vocals, George Young - bass, Harry Vanda - lead guitar, Malcolm Young - rhythm guitar, John Proud - drums, Warren Morgan - piano, Hammond organ, Paul Bagshaw - strings.
