Released in 2000 after a two-decade absence, this album marked Steely Dan's return as a functioning studio project, not as some nostalgia exercise. Led by Walter Becker and Donald Fagen, the New York-rooted duo picked up their long-running fascination with craft, studio control and musical exactitude, largely ignoring shifts in rock culture that had unfolded in the interim. The songs move at an unhurried pace, built from immaculate rhythm sections, glassy guitar lines and carefully staged horn arrangements. Tracks such as 'Jack Of Speed' and 'West Of Hollywood' unfold with deliberate smoothness, their grooves polished to a near-reflective sheen. Vocals sit lightly in the mix, more conversational than emotive, while the dense production reveals its detail gradually. It remains a record obsessed with finish and precision, very much in keeping with Steely Dan's late-period identity.
