This new Cisco reissue is vastly superior to both the original pressing and to Mobile Fidelity's ½ speed mastered reissue…This is sublime ear candy and more importantly magnificent music making. No wonder it retains its attraction 30 years after first being issued. More proof that we're living in the second coming of analog." Music = 10/11; Sound = 10/11 – Michael Fremer,
"If you were an audiophile in the 70s, you owned Aja." – Rolling Stone, 2001, placing it No. 145 of the 500 Greatest Albums Ever Recorded
And now, in commemoration of its 30th anniversary, Aja IS BACK – IN EVEN GREATER GLORY! Remastered by Kevin Gray, cut at AcousTech Mastering, Pressed on virgin 180-gram vinyl at RTI! Aja has now gotten the royal treatment!
This reissue has been personally approved by Donald Fagen and Walter Becker as well as Aja recording engineer Elliot Scheiner.
"(Aja) is the most perfect thing I have ever heard in my life. It is a religion." – Gareth Jones, renowned record producer/engineer
Long argued as one of the (if not THE) best rock recording ever and a permanent fixture on many a demo system in the late '70s and '80s, Aja was the culmination of everything Donald Fagen and Walter Becker aspired to accomplish in their storied careers. It was the first album certified platinum (eventually selling more than 5 million copies in the U.S.) by the then-new RIAA sales tracking system. It made Steely Dan superstars. It contained three ubiquitous U.S. Top 40 singles in "Peg," "Josie" and "Deacon Blues," though each of the seven tracks are wonderful.
And then there's the sound. Deservedly winning the 1978 Grammy Award for non-classical engineering, Roger "The Immortal" Nichols was helped by a who's-who of the top audio guys in the industry: Bill Schnee, Al Schmitt and Elliot Scheiner. The meticulous recording is almost fetishistic in its attention to detail. Every note of even the densest tracks can be clearly heard, with every instrument perfectly placed.

This represents the pinnacle of Steely Dan's gradual transition from rock band to their own brand of jazz-influenced white soul. Guitars were replaced by keyboards, and saxophones became more common. Walter Becker and Donald Fagen were only interested in spending time in the recording studios, while the fans pined and waited. The result set new standards in recorded excellence, and is regularly used as a hi-fi shop demonstration. The ambitious title track was deemed too difficult for radio play and only the two overtly accessible tracks `Josie' and `Peg', gave them valuable exposure.
GAUCHO - For Gaucho, Fagen, Becker and their long-time producer Gary Katz employed their usual all-star lineup of musicians, among them singers Patti Austin, Michael McDonald and Valerie Simpson; guitarists Mark Knopfler, Larry Carlton, Rick Derringer and Steve Khan; horn players Michael and Randy Brecker, David Sanborn and Tom Scott; pianist Joe Sample, and drummers Steve Gadd, Rick Marotta, Jeff Porcaro and Bernard “Pretty” Purdie. The result was a pop-jazz album worthy of its illustrious predecessor, Aja.

“How we do it: First we hook up a sequence of sleek & slinky musical cells over which we sprinkle the most amusing lyrics. Immediately we get on the horn and round up our swinging sidemen, including but not limited to Keith Carlock (drums), Jon Herrington (guitar), Hugh McCracken (guitar), Ted Baker (keyboards), and yrs. truly, Mssrs. Becker and Fagen, on our respective axes. Next thing you know, the wiggy vocals and stellar solo work are stacked atop the now-realized grooves and harmonies. After mixdown, the finished album reveals to its makers deep subterranean themes and powerful emotional undercurrents that satisfy and surprise at the same time.”— Walter Becker and Donald Fagen Track Listings 1. CAN'T BUY A THRILL - 180 GRAM LIMITED AUDIOPHILE EDITION -
Two names in particular spring to mind in connection with Steely Dan: Donald Fagen and Walter Becker. The two men discovered while at college at the end of the Sixties that they shared musical tastes, although they played in different bands. They subsequently formed a songwriter duo before making their breakthrough in 1972 under the name Steely Dan (a name which came from William Burrough's novel The Naked Lunch) with their debut album Can't Buy A Thrill. This LP remained for over a year in the Billboard charts, and the single taken from the album, Do It Again, leaped into the Top Ten. This was just the beginning of an extraordinarily successful career which lasted until the temporary disbandment of the group in 1981 (a brand new album entitled Two Against Nature has appeared since then). Every one of their seven studio albums was crowned with a Gold or Platinum Disc. Can't Buy A Thrill is not as polished as later albums, such as Aja or Gaucho for example, but their inimitable mixture of melodic rock, shot through with soul, jazzy rhythms and ambitious instrumental solos made Fagen and Becker stand out from all the others right from the very start. Apart from the now classic songs such as Dirty Work, Midnight Cruiser, Reelin' The Years and of course the unforgettable Do It Again, it goes without saying that all the others titles are endowed with all those qualities which make Steely Dan so unique. Recording: 1972 at The Village Recorder, Los Angeles CA., USA, by Roger Nichols and Tim Weston Production: Gary Katz

This DOUBLE VINYL collection is the soundtrack from the 1978 ill-fated movie. Pushing the visuals aside, the collection includes a majority of the top selling classic rock artists performing their classic hit singles that dominated the airwaves in the 1970's.
Walter Brecker and Donald Fagen/Steely Dan are represented with their newly recorded title track that opens the collection and reprise that closes out the second disc. Their first major chart success, the relentless "Do It Again," is also included.
The Eagles are represented as a group on "Life In The Fast Lane," from the "Hotel California" album, while there are 2 solo members with individual tracks: Joe Walsh does a parody of fortune and fame on the tongue and cheek track, "Life's Been Good." Randy Meisner performs on "Bad Man."
One of the most popular female vocalists of the 1970's was Linda Ronstadt. She has 2 live performances on the album, which she also performed in the film, "Tumbling Dice," (a Rolling Stones track) and "Poor Poor Pitiful Me."
Boston's feel good debut single, "More Than A Feeling" is on the soundtrack, which was extracted from their multiplatinum eponyomous debut that sold more copies that any debut album during its inception. Queen rocks with their stadium anthum, "We Will Rock You." Steve Miller soars on "Fly Like An Eagle." Tom Petty and the Heartbreaker's trademark sound is heard on "Breakdown." Lou Gramm's high pitched vocals are evident on the track "Cold As Ice." The Doobie Brothers "It Keeps You Runnin'" is also included in this important rock and roll collection.
The soundtrack also sports Jimmy Buffet's electric performance on "Livingston Saturday Night." Folker and adult contemporary stylist, Dan Fogelberg delivers one of his most emotionally wrenching ballads with "There's A Place In The World For A Gambler," while New York's own, Billy Joel sings his trademark ballad and grammy award winning song of the year, "Just The Way You Are." James Taylor is represented with the mid-tempo love song,"Your Smiling Face" and jazz musician Boz Scaggs performs his up tempo signature track "Lido Shuffle," that originaly appeared on his "Silk Degrees" album.
This collection brings the listener back to a more innocent time in rock and roll (if that was possible), when the emphasis was primarily on the music itself and the live performances. It is essential listening for avid fans of the rock and roll medium. Skip the movie and go straight for the soundtrack!
