When the weight of the world presses down, Mavis Staples reminds us that love is still a powerful act of resistance. Sad And Beautiful World marks another shining chapter in her legendary career and this time she channels seven decades of American music through her unmistakable voice. With Brad Cook at the production helm, she reshapes songs by Tom Waits, Frank Ocean, Sparklehorse, Gillian Welch and others into bold, soulful declarations. Though joined by heavy hitters like Buddy Guy, Bonnie Raitt, Jeff Tweedy, Derek Trucks and Justin Vernon, Staples remains the magnetic centre here with her voice equal parts tenderness and toughness.
