STAN TRACEY

Post Bop / Hard Bop / Avant-Garde Jazz / Big Band / Progressive Big Band / Latin Jazz • United Kingdom Jazz music community with discographies, reviews and forums Stan Tracey, who died at age 86 in 2013, was Britain’s finest and most original jazz composer; he was also a pianist of rare distinction, whose work drew praise from some of the greatest jazz musicians — the saxophonist Sonny Rollins once demanding: “Does anyone here realize just how good he is?” Tracey, who was entirely self-taught as a musician, possessed a style that was instantly recognizable. Shaped originally by the twin influences of Duke Ellington and Thelonius Monk, it was founded on a deep vein of lyricism only partly concealed beneath a tough, knotty surface. Like both his mentors, he composed not for instruments but for individual players, and his work brought out the best in several generations of jazz musicians.
