SPONTANEOUS COMBUSTION – Same ORIG Harvest LP /SHVL 801 (UK, Stereo, 1972)

Happy to present another overlooked, superbly crafted UK prog LP – one of Harvest’s worst sellers and in my opinion, as rare and hard to find as some of the early SHVL titles such as The Battered Ornaments ‘Mantle Piece’ or the Tea & Symphony albums.  This is an intricate, sometimes heavy, always inventive collection of songs produced by Greg Lake and this copy is a lovely one for any Harvest or progressive connoisseur.

The unlaminated, textured gatefold sleeve was made in the UK by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd and I would imagine is among the best surviving copies.  The reason for this is that the previous owner kept this striking pop-art design in a gatefold protective cover and therefore it has survived in a fabulous state.  Following are the only minor imperfections away from mint: a single fingerprint mark to the front right side, VERY light rubbing to the textured card, a faint ring impression to the rear top, some slight rubs to the top edge and some tiny creases from the spine out.  Other than these, there is NO creasing to either front, rear or inner gate, there are NO splits or tears, there is HARDLY any wear to the strong spine or the sharp corners, NO writing or residue at all, a virtually ‘as new’ inner gate, NO fading of the fantastic pop-art colours and barely any sign of feathering or softening of the opening edges.  So hard to find in any state, but in this beautifully clean EX+ (Excellent Plus) condition?  Well, you decide!

The classic lime green Harvest labels display the EMI box (as issued – the boxed label started in 1971) and are immaculate with one spindle trail per side (perhaps showing how little this has been played!).  NO writing, stickers, residue, dirt spots or fading of the colours.  Lovely pair of vintage Harvest!

The sharp, medium weight disc is presented in its original Harvest advertising poly-lined inner and is a great accompaniment to the superb sleeve.  Side 1 grades M- (Mint Minus) with no cosmetic gripes to note at all, while on Side 2 there is a 7cm scuff (non-sounding), and two smaller marks, one of which produces around a dozen VERY LIGHT VIRTUALLY INAUDIBLE TICKS.  So, visually Side 2 looks fine, but the ISOLATED marks means I’m grading it VG+ (Very Good Plus).  The whole record HAS BEEN CAREFULLY LISTENED TO AND PLAYS ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANTLY with NO clicks, loud pops, hiss, distortion, loss of clarity NOT EVEN ANY DISCERNIBLE CRACKLE OR SURFACE STATIC!!  This Lp was very well produced and the music comes through clean, rich, loud and clear on playback.  Sounds like new basically.

The brainchild of Gary Margetts, this underrated outfit went on to make another LP for Harvest before fading into obscurity, but true Prog enthusiasts know just how good this long out-of-press gem really is.  No reserve!
