SPITERI "Spiteri"
SPITERI - Self Titled LP - GM Records - GML 1006
Original 1973 LP on the UK GM label, GML 1006
Superb Rare 1973 Prog Psych LP with a mix of South American rhythms from this Venezuelan group, similar to the early harder edged fuzz guitar / organ Santana stuff from their debut 1969 LP.
Listed in Hans Pakora's book 3001 Record Collector Dreams (with 3 stars!), this LP is seriously rare and hardly ever turns up for sale.
This is the original 1973 UK release on GM records.

Quite magical Latin jazz funk from this super-talented band out of Venezuela, recorded in London in 1973 with the blessings and support of such notable British musicians as Paul McCartney, Noel Redding, Steve Winwood and Bob Marley (okay, he wasn’t British, but still). Very similar to War, this is super tight, always funky, always shaking Latino rock with a solid groove thanks to a stellar rhythm section and excellent percussionists. And they did it with less musicians than War! Although with six on the cover, only slightly less.
Leadoff track “Campesina” is a good indication of how great this album is. Alternating between solid rock verses and jazzy trippy breaks, in between one of the all-time great catchy Latin choruses. Likewise “Don’t You Look Behind,” where a punishing heavy guitar rock chorus alternates with lighter, airier, jazzier verses. If there were six band members according to the cover, on this song you’d swear four of ‘em were playing guitar.
The 8-minute “Soul Inside” gives Spiteri a chance to stretch out a bit, with plenty of trippy cymbal washes, flutes and hand drums creating a mystical otherworldly vibe before finally launching into a straight-ahead rock sound at the 3-minute mark. Like all of Spiteri’s songs, the groove is strong and the guitar soloing is wicked – imagine Santana if they were nastier, or War if they were faster. Occasionally strings pop into the mix – this was recorded in London, after all – but they only add to the lushness of the ballads. Don’t worry, there’s still plenty of time to shake your rump-ah.
After 35-plus years of complete obscurity, it’s nice to see Spiteri’s album finally get a deluxe reissue treatment. It’s certainly one of the pinnacles of Latin funk rock, and quite possibly the crown jewel of Venezuelan music.
