Background -

The very best jazz ever to come from the former Czechoslovakia was undoubtedly that by the Gustav Brom Big Band. One constantly heard European and American jazz musicians who performed at festivals in Prague, Bratislava or Brünn raving about the excellent soloists and arrangers of this band. Unfortunately, international record companies were not interested in quality but in sales figures. How lucky, therefore, that the Black Forest recording company SABA was not influenced by all the rest: the result was first-class jazz recordings by this big band made under the optimal conditions offered by the SABA studio. The band’s musicians contributed ten excellent written-out compositions, as well as Henry Mancini’s Moon River in a new arrangement by Zdenek Nowák.

One of the most important “trademarks” of the band was the musicians’ immense joy in playing which is particularly noticeable in Lypso and Contraband. This factor, together with their mastery of all musical styles from Dixie to Modern, make these recordings by the Gustav Brom Big Band a highly individual contribution to the history of the big bands in the genre of jazz. And for those collectors who, in the past, have preferred to concentrate on the American big bands, this re-release offers a great opportunity to revise their opinion that a European band is incapable of swinging.
