Two 180 Gram Double LP Sets (2 TITLES TOTAL OF 4 LPS) with 28 classics by the James Brown from his earliest works of “Papa’s Got A Brand New Bag” and “I Got You” are known by everybody except maybe a Martian or two. With Body Dylan, Chuck Berry, Jimi Hendrix, and Elvis Presley, the US has had its share of influential musical giants. But, definitely one of the best is The Godfather of Soul.
You hear echoes of James Brown in most of the stuff around for the last thirty years, nearly the entire mid-to-late 70’s and 80’s soul scene was a pale imitation of the amazingly rhythmic originality of James Brown’s work. Unlike some of his successors, James Brown is real, varied, and the original.

ISAAC HAYES GREATEST HIT SINGLES LP
Inducted in the Songwriters Hall Of Fame in 2005!
Isaac Hayes was a driving force behind the southern soul music label Stax Records where he served as an in-house songwriter and as a record producer teaming with his partner David Porter during the mid-1960s.
He was inducted in the Songwriters Hall Of Fame in 2005 along with Bill withers, the Sherman Brothers, Steve Cropper and John Fogerty in recognition of writing scores of notable songs for themselves and others.
Hayes began recording in the late '60s and put out several successful soul albums including Hot Buttered Soul (1969) and Black Moses (1971). He is well known for his musical score for the film Shaft (1971). He was awarded the Academy Award for best Original Song in 1972 for the "Theme From Shaft", which is included on this album of Greatest Hit Singles by the iconic musician.
"One of the best-available Isaac Hayes compilation, Greatest Hit Singles bypasses a couple of his later disco hits, but the result is a more unified sound that helps illustrate why Hayes was so important to the development of '70s soul...for a more concentrated dose of Hayes at his best, Greatest Hit Singles is hard to beat." - Steve Huey, allmusic

An incredible collection spanning the entire recorded career of the Neville Brothers, from The Hawketts' (featuring Art Neville) first release in 1954 through live tracks recorded in the mid-80's. The range of styles is impressive, including late 50's New Orleans Rock 'n' Roll, sentimental ballads, early 70's funk, Mardi Gras band music, and more heavily produced sounds of the 80's.
The compositions include a huge number of gems from the Allen Toussaint catalogue (some credited to Toussaint, some to "Naomi Neville"), tracks from the individual Nevilles (including Aaron's jail-penned "Every Day" and Cyril's classic "Brother John"), as well as songs by Lieber/Stoller, John Hiatt and others. The big hit single with a bullet ("Tell It Like It Is") is included in an excellent live version.
The big revelation to me was hearing Aaron Neville's incredible voice singing so many different styles of music. Besides the ballads that I was already familiar with, Aaron proves himself able to handle more upbeat pieces handily.
Overall a great collection of great songs from a great band. The only thing that's probably better is to get all the original singles and LP's.

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Philadelphia International Records, Legacy releases brand new vinyl compilations from six classic PIR artists.
During his career, three-time Grammy winner Lou Rawls released more than 60 albums, sold more than 40 million records, and had numerous charting singles. In 1976 Rawls signed with Philadelphia International and recorded the album All Things In Time, which sold a million copies. The album contained the Grammy-nominated hit song "You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine", which became his biggest selling single, selling a million copies, topping the R&B and Adult Contemporary charts, and reaching No. 2 on the pop chart. Another track from the album, "Groovy People", also earned Rawls a Grammy nomination, for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance.
1977's Unmistakably Lou won Rawls a Grammy for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance, and contained the single "See You When I Git There". Another 1977 PIR release, When You Hear Lou, You've Heard It All, featured the hit single "Lady Love" and earned Rawls another Grammy nomination for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance. The title track from 1979's Let Me Be Good To You hit #11 on the R&B chart, while the album itself peaked at #13 R&B and #49 on the Pop chart.

Sly & The Family Stone/GREATEST HITS - Gatefold Cover - EPIC RECORDS PE-30325 PRESSING
Sly and the Family Stone, led by the enigmatic Sylvester Stewart (aka Sly Stone), were a pioneering funk band in the 60s and 70s who merged rock with funk, had a sexually and racially integrated line-up, and who famously moved from optimistic party anthems and hippy idealism to drug-induced frustration and paranoia.
Sly and the Family Stone were formed in 1966 when Sly Stone merged his struggling band with the struggling band of his brother Freddie, and added bassist Larry Graham. A debut album received good reviews but didn't sell well, so they were reluctantly persuaded to record an overtly commercial single to boost their reputation. Sly came up with the goods in January 1968 with the raucous party anthem "Dance to the Music", which got to No.8 in the pop charts and influenced the sound of soul music for the next several years. There are a few interesting innovations in just this one song: it is performed by a racially integrated group and with instrumental participation by women, it included rock guitar parts in a funk song, and there are four lead singers who take turns to sing.
This was followed in 1969 by their first classic album, Stand!, which included hit singles "Everyday People/Sing a Simple Song" and "I Want to Take You Higher". It eventually sold over three million copies and was followed by a famous Woodstock appearance, and another hit single: "Hot Fun in the Summertime". But internal differences were arising and illicit drug use was increasing at this time, so in the following two years only one single was released. "Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)" (December 69) is important for two reasons: it prominently featured Larry Graham's new slap-bass method that would become a standard in funk; and it signified the beginning of Sly and the Family Stone's darker period, as they expressed their frustration that the hippy ideals they once offered, of peace and love for all mankind, weren't working.
For much of 70/71, Sly Stone sank deeper into a drug habit and retreated from recording duties. A comeback single, "Family Affair", reached No.1 in late 1971, before the November release of their most acclaimed work: There's a Riot Goin' On. An album of melancholy and frustration, it announced the passing of 60s idealism and the new reality of widespread socio-economic problems. Despite the dark themes, it reached No.1 and is regarded as one of the greatest albums of the decade.
Subsequent albums, such as Fresh (1973) and Small Talk (1974), Fresh is now considered as an important album in the development of funk, while their work overall is regarded as highly influential for artists such as Stevie Wonder, Prince, and Michael Jackson. Eventually the band fizzled out as members became increasingly frustrated with Sly's erratic and unreliable behaviour, and bookings for live shows dried up. Officially splitting in 1975, some of the key members have since reformed and were touring Europe with Sly in 2007.
As the title would lead to you to believe, these are the greatest hits from a group that had a fair share of hits in the late '60s and early '70s. Too pop savvy to be merely a funk band, and too damn funky to be just a rock band, Sly and his multicultural crew made intelligent party music that crossed boundaries and became AM radio staples. Included in this collection are smashes like "Dance to the Music", "M'lady", "Sing A Simple Song",
Tracks include: 1. I Want To Take You Higher 2. Everybody Is A Star 3. Stand! 4. Life 5. Fun 6. You Can Make It If You Try 7. Dance To The Music 8. Everyday People 9. Hot Fun In The Summertime 10. M'Lady 11. Sing A Simple Song 12. Thank You

EARTH WIND & FIRE GREATEST HITS VOL 1 COLUMBIA/CBS RECORDS FC 35647
Like a lot of second-wave funk bands, EARTH, WIND & FIRE were adept at balancing slickness and rawness. They achieved truly miraculous moments like the rocking “Shining Star” (which was their lone number one pop single) and the gloriously syncopated “September”. “Got To Get You Into My Life” -- is a unified cover of the Beatles’ hit and is one of the greatest Beatles covers from Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.
EARTH, WIND & FIRE were a large ensemble who incorporated jazz, soul and funk into their music with a positive attitude.
When it was originally released in 1978, The Best of Earth, Wind & Fire, Vol. 1 was a succinct, ten-track collection of the group's best and biggest singles up to that point. There was one brand-new song, the excellent "September," which soon became a hit in its own right, plus the non-LP Beatles cover "Got to Get You Into My Life," which was recorded for the Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band film, makes its first appearance on an EWF album here. EWF's commercial prime hadn't yet ended when this collection appeared; thus, it's missing several crucial latter-day hits, including the slinky funk of "Serpentine Fire," the ballad "After the Love Has Gone," and the disco smashes "Let's Groove" and "Boogie Wonderland." But even if it's an incomplete hits collection, The Best of Earth, Wind & Fire, Vol. 1 still ranks as a strong encapsulation of EWF the funk innovators. The singles gathered here constitute some of the richest, most sophisticated music the funk movement ever produced; when the absolute cream of the group's catalog is heard in such a concentrated fashion, the effect is dazzling.
1 Got to Get You into My Life
2 Fantasy
3 Can't Hide Love
4 Love Music
5 Getaway
6 That's the Way of the World
7 September
8 Shining Star
9 Reasons
10 Sing a Song
BEST OF EARTH, WIND & FIRE VOLUME 2 Columbia Records/CBS OC-45013 retained their hit-making touch into the ‘80s, as this sequel to their 1978 BEST OF makes clear with “Let’s Groove” (1981) and “Turn On (The Bent Box)” (1988). EARTH, WIND & FIRE fans will find it difficult to assemble the Greatest Hits by this powerful group. Almost all of their songs qualify as great hits. They laid a remarkable foundation for the Disco Era with a combination of vocal styles.
Tracks include: Turn On (The Beat Box) - Let’s Groove - After The Love Has Gone - Fantasy - Devotion - Serpentine Fire - Love’s Holiday - Boogie Wonderland - Saturday Nite and Mighty Mighty.
Larry Williams Here's Larry Williams Import LP New Orleans R&B Classic On Vinyl LP! Limited To 500 Copies!
The great New Orleans R&B singer Larry Williams may not have the same name recognition as Fats Domino, Ernie K-Doe, or Roy Brown but his hits, especially "Short Fat Fannie" and "Bony Maronie", are still universally recognizable classics. Signed to Specialty Records in 1957 after meeting Little Richard and his producer while he was recording in NOLA, Williams struck gold with one of his earliest singles, "Short Fat Fannie", which reached #1 on the R&B chart, and #5 on the pop chart. Here's Larry Williams collects all his biggest singles on one LP along with some killer deep cuts. If you dig piano driven R&B shouters this Larry Williams LP is absolutely essential, a classic from one of New Orleans' greatest.
"One of the great R&B long-players of the '50s, Here's Larry Williams collects nearly all of the Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter's key work, and a bunch of smokin' obscurities besides. Listening to these tracks, it's clear why John Lennon was such a huge Larry Williams fan; his rough-and-ready no-bull voice is elastic enough to move from a Little Richard trill to a Ray Charles growl, and songs like 'Dizzy Miss Lizzy' and 'Short Fat Fannie' are raucous enough to be punk rock nearly a full two decades before the concept was even in existence." - AllMusic

HAROLD MARVIN & THE BLUE NOTES COLLECTORS ITEMS PHILADELPHIA/CBS RECORDS PZ-34232 - AND SO LONG OUT OF PRINT IT DOESN'T EVEN HAVE A BARCODE ON THE JACKET - Their facility with the kind of danceable R and B that would soon enough be called disco (and, in their case, was spinning the disco clubs about as often as the earlier Donna Summer and the Trammps, among others) should never obscure that, first and foremost, the lineup of Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes which became stars in the early 1970s was a soul ensemble and a powerful enough one. You can find plenty enough who mistake them for just another disco act, and that's horribly unfair.Their regular albums tended a little too much toward either filler or extensions that didn't really enhance the songs, but here is where you get the absolute best of this quintet - from "If You Don't Know Me By Now" and "I Miss You" through "Bad Luck," "Where Are All My Friends," and "The Love I Lost" - without the excess and with everything that made them stars, from the effortless harmonies and rhythmic facility to the singular voice (maybe the most stentorian classic soul voice since Levi Stubbs) of Teddy Pendergrass (or, Theodore Pendergrass, as he was usually billed in the Blue Notes' heyday). Even three decades after their most successful period ended acrimoniously, this music is both the bridge between the vintage 1960s soul and what the 1970s ultimately became, for better or worse. Don't blame the Blue Notes for what was developed on the other side of the bridge; this set makes clear enough that, at their best, they had the music's best interest at heart. Track Listings 1. The Love I Lost 2. Bad Luck 3. If You Don't Know Me by Now 4. Be for Real 5. Wake up Everybody 6. Hope That We Can Be Together Soon 7. Where Are All My Friends
