Description
SOSEME MAKONDE Manzara Afro DISCO FUNK BREAKS 7 inch
Makonde - Soseme Makonde / Manzara EMI / Pathe Marconi France 1977OK so this here is a true bboy classic!! But it has remained in total obscurity until recently when Dj Dan 'Dusty Kid' (Dusty Fingers) unearthed it from Jazzy Jay's personal crates, and then Kon & Amir compiled it on one of their BBE releases. The originals are still so very hard to come by. This 7 inch is two sides of heavy, dirty Afro funk / disco with a ridiculous breakdown. Afrika Bambaataa and Jazzy Jay used to play the break on the very first hip hop parties in the late 70s, I have proof of this on some live cassettes recorded around 1978/9.
The story behind the release, as little as we know, is also fascinating: Makonde was a group from Kenya, apparently led by a Greek guy depicted on the cover, named on the cover as Taso Stefanou (if anybody has more background story on them I'd be keen to know). They released an LP (which I own, it's not that good with some disco-ish and more Afro tunes in English and Swahili) and then an EP & 7 inch of this song 'Manzara' which is not on the LP!
Manzara is their best claim to fame though and you do NEED this in your collection. Worth the purchase for the picture cover alone... This copy is in great condition. A side Soseme Makonde
B side Manzara
