As the tenor sax is not in the same key as an alto, Sonny Rollins would have to transpose a lot of music to take a tribute to Charlie Parker to a high level. Instead Rollins has chosen standards associated with Parker, and recorded them within a year after Bird's passing. This idea poses some peculiar challenges, added on to the fact that the quintet of Rollins starts the proceedings with a 27-minute medley of seven tunes seamlessly stitched together. Pianist Wade Legge, an unsung hero of jazz in the '50s for sure, plays some wonderful music here, and laces the grooves of the tunes together, while bassist George Morrow and the always exceptional drummer Max Roach keep things moving forward. Even more unusual is that trumpeter Kenny Dorham is in many instances invisible on the date, playing less than a cursory role to Rollins. Dorham rarely plays together with him, and is much more separate than equal, which in many regards is a shame. Considering how well Dorham and tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson worked as a tandem, one wonders why this happened. The music certainly has its moments, as on the inexhaustible medley. Rollins plays the melody on alternating songs "I Remember You" and "They Can't Take That Away from Me," Dorham has at it for "My Melancholy Baby" and "Just Friends," with Legge getting his two cents in on trio only versions of "Old Folks" and "My Little Suede Shoes." Finally the whole band joins in on the ten-minute finale "Star Eyes." Even for the heartiest fans, this long-winded exercise might prove taxing. Rollins does the ballad "I've Grown Accustomed to Your (Her) Face," and the horns finally play together for the nearly 12-minute cool waltz "Kids Know." A disappointment in terms of the division of labor, and not the merging of titans jazz lovers would have wished for, this recording still provides a great deal of high level music that could have been so much more.

PLEASE NOTE: THIS ITEM COMES FROM OUR RECENT ACQUISITION OF ABOUT 10 1950s ALBUMS WHICH ALL HAD A MILD-TO-MODERATE COVER DAMAGE DUE TO EXTENDED EXPOSURE TO HUMIDITY (THE RECORDS WERE ENTIRELY UNAFFECTED); TYPICALLY, THE PAPER SLICK ON THE FRONT PANELS HAD SEPARATED FROM THE CARDBOARD BASES AND HAD TO BE REATTACHED; THERE ARE ALSO FISSURES AND CRACKS IN THE LAMINATION ON THE FRONT SIDE, OR ON THE PAPER SLICK ON THE BACK PANEL,  MINOR WARPS ALONG THE OPENING, AS WELL AS A FEW TINY PEEL-OFF MARKS ON THE BACK SIDE;  THE STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY OF THE COVER'S CARDBOARD BASE DOES NOT APPEAR SIGNIFICANTLY AFFECTED, BUT THE PAPER SLICK ON THE BACK AND THE LAMINATED SLICK ON THE FRONT WILL TYPICALLY HAVE SOME PROBLEMS; BEFORE YOU PLACE A BID, PLEASE READ CAREFULLY OUR COVER CONDITION SO AS TO AVOID ANY DISAPPOINTMENTS LATER THANK YOU.

·                               CONDITION:

·                               RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VERY GOOD+(+) . CAUTION: The vinyl is NOT MINT or NEAR MINT, but is nevertheless in a very nice and clean condition. There are some surface marks and abrasions, mostly light and superficial, although some may be longer than 1.1/4 inches (1 inch = 2.5 centimeters)

(b)          The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(c)           The record has a ►Rudy Van Gelder name, or  his initials (RVG) stamped or hand-etched in the trail-off vinyl (dead wax). On SOME  Jazz labels (Blue Note, Savoy, Regent, Prestige, Impulse, Verve…) this stamp signifies highly professional masterings either done by - or  personally authorized by - the legendary engineer himself.

(d)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(e)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER (THIS IS THE ORIGINAL, LAMINATED, GLOSSY COVER):

THE COVER IS ABOUT VERY GOOD+(+)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        A faint water stain affects the area about 1 inch wide along the edges (spine, bottom, opening side, top seam); there is no structural damage to the cover, and the cardboard base is intact, however, the stain is visible and has caused some erosion in the firmness of the cover ,  visible yellowish discoloration, a few small peel-off marks and a slight warp in the affected area (which has no effect on the record whatsoever).  All tiny peel-off marks COMBINED total less than 1 square inch and are restricted to the back panel.   (VISIBLE ON BACK SIDE ONLY)

-        Cover has a small original price sticker, which may be possible to remove with a little effort (we did not attempt to)

-         Cover has a visible crack (tear) in the paper slick on the back panel   (VISIBLE ON BACK SIDE ONLY)

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2  (front side) and 4 (back side)

-         Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging  (nothing significant).

-         Minor discoloration (color fading) noted along the spine.

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine

-         Back cover has a few yellowish dust speckles scattered here and there (these tiny spots are not overly obtrusive or distracting)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No split seams

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
