released c. 1956 by Prestige # PRLP-7095

rare Mono US Original Promotional Copy and
Deep Groove Pressing of this rare Jazz Album with
yellow "Fireworks" Labels that have the Bergenfield, NJ
address on the labels but the 447 West 50th Street
New York 19 N.Y. address on the back cover (we believe
this came out as the label was transitioning to the new
address & this Promo Copy must've been made before any
commercial copies came out with matching addresses
and this copy also has an error in the credits on back
listing Kenny Dorham as playing Tenor Sax instead
of the trumpet - not sure if this was later corrected?)
and it has the Rudy Van Gelder RVG mastering stamp in
the dead wax (Van Gelder engineered, recorded and
mastered this Lp) and this LP is tribute to Charlie Parker
who had recently passed away. there's a medley of seven
standards associated with Bird + the lilting Rollins waltz
"Kids Know" as well as a balladic exploration of "I've
Grown Accustomed to Your Face" with Kenny Dorham
Wade Legge, George Morrow and Max Roach
providing excellent playing throughout

~ condition ~


record is in Excellent - Condition and has been
fully Play Tested and it Sounds Fantastic and plays with
no skips or repeats with a warm full loud tone but it does
have occasional mellow crackle & there is a small 1/2"
scratch on side that briefly causes soft quiet tics but it
otherwise has shiny clean vinyl with just light wear
and has bright mostly clean & wear-free labels
with no writing or markings

cover is in Very Good Condition with bold bright
printing and has intact seams but it does have a bit
of wear to the spine, corners & edges and the top
and bottom seams have neat archival repairs done
from the inside & are only seen upon close inspection
and there is a sticker at the upper-lefthand-corner
of the front cover (this came from a Radio Station's
library) & the back cover has a red Promo Stamp
on it in addition to a little drawing at the center of
the top & someone has corrected the erroneous
sax credit by Kenny Dorham's name in pen

~ review ~


As the tenor sax is not in the same key as an alto
Sonny Rollins would have to transpose a lot of music
to take a tribute to Charlie Parker to a high level. Instead
Rollins has chosen standards associated with Parker and
recorded them within a year of Bird's passing starting the
proceedings with a 27-minute medley of seven tunes
seamlessly stitched together and pianist Wade Legge (who
was an unsung hero of jazz in the '50s for sure) plays
some wonderful music here, lacing the grooves of the
tunes together, while bassist George Morrow & the always
exceptional drummer Max Roach keep things moving forward
but it is unusual that trumpeter Kenny Dorham is in many
instances invisible on the date, rarely playing together with
Rollins who plays the melody on "I Remember You" and
"They Can't Take That Away from Me" while Dorham plays
it on "My Melancholy Baby" and "Just Friends" with Legge
getting his two cents in on trio only versions of "Old Folks"
and "My Little Suede Shoes." Finally the whole band joins
in on the ten-minute finale "Star Eyes" and Rollins does
the ballad "I've Grown Accustomed to Your (Her) Face"
and then the horns finally play together for the
nearly 12-minute cool waltz "Kids Know"


~ Reid Miles ~


Reid Miles was the in-house designer at Blue Note
and designed most of their album covers from 1955 to
1967 combining minimal abstract forms with an intense
color sensibility. While Miles is often associated with
Bauhaus rigor, his record covers are more closely related
to Color Field + Minimalist artists like Ellsworth Kelly

~ Our Record Condition Guide ~


since everyone has their own ideas about grading the condition
of records, we've decided to spell out how we do it. our descriptions are
also extremely thorough & individually note flaws that a generic condition grade
cannot. we also occasionally assign a + and - for in-between grades

Mint

perfect, never played & usually still factory sealed

Near Mint

nearly perfect with almost no signs of handling

Excellent

the slightest visual wear that in no way interferes with the sound

 Very Good +

light visible signs of handling & wear but well taken care of
and plays with only mellow occasional crackle and/or soft pops but 
nothing interfering with enjoying the record/artwork

Very Good

obviously used & handled, but not mishandled, with no skips,
repeats or bad noise, but with noticeable crackle, pops & soft tics or
artwork defects, but nothing too bad overall

 Very Good -

considerable visible wear & background noise with possible
skips, repeats, tics and cover flaws, but still enjoyable & would
be obviously well-used and somewhat mishandled

So-So

anything below VG- which we rarely sell, except
for really rare records that are worth listing only because
they're so hard to find & sought-after in any condition

Disclaimer

not everyone's turntable sounds & functions the same, but we
have a nice sensitive set-up that makes flaws very obvious to us and we try
to note everything we ear and see. while vinyl is an awesome sounding format,
there is almost always some sort of background noise while listening to a
record. we are just about as picky as anyone, so trust us
but be sure to read our descriptions carefully!
