SMALL FACES, OGDENS' NUT GONE FLAKE, 1968 UK IMMEDIATE

Here for auction is a lovely example of the iconic concept album by SMALL FACES titled “OGDENS’NUT GONE FLAKE”, Catalogue Number IMLP 012. This is an ORIGINAL 1968 UK MONO 1st PRESSING on the LILAC IMMEDIATE RECORD LABEL, with the 1st issue CIRCULAR FOLDOUT SLEEVE.     

The circular 5-leaf foldout sleeve, printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd., is in EX condition (strictly graded) with only the lightest signs of wear. The front and back covers are unmarked with just a few very light creases near the edges. The vivid colours have not faded. All the hinges are fully intact with no splits or tears. The complicated 5-leaf design has resulted in one of the most fragile sleeves ever manufactured. You can see from the photos that this is a beautiful example which should please most collectors.

The vinyl retains a deep mirror-like shine and sits perfectly flat on the turntable. It is a nice solid pressing with a tapered rim edge.

The Matrix Numbers and stampers are:

Side 1 – IMLP 012 – 1L     1      M

Side 2 – IMLP 012 – 2L     2      T

Visually I would grade both sides as being in VG(+) condition, as there are some noticeable sleeve removal type rub marks and hairlines visible under bright light. There is also a stylus mark across the second half of the last track on Side 1. These marks are purely superficial and do not cause any significant audio problems (no loud repetitive clicks). The beautiful lilac Immediate labels are unmarked apart from some spindle traces near the centres.

PLAYGRADE ASSESSMENT:

This is a particularly vibrant and loud-cut mono pressing which sounds sensational played at loud volume. The record plays to a very high standard. All frequencies are crystal clear and there is barely any discernable deterioration in sound quality. There are no pops or loud clicks, and only very low levels of unwanted noise (just occasional light surface sound which is never intrusive). A significantly better playing original copy may be quite difficult to find!

GRADINGS

The records that I offer for sale have been critically play-graded, at loud volume, on a Rega Planar 3 turntable fitted with an Elys 2 cartridge. I will only sell records that play to a high standard. My gradings are strict and in accordance with the following descriptions:

·         MINT- Record is superb, almost like new, with just a few sleeve removal type surface marks and no deterioration in sound quality. Sleeve is near perfect in all respects

·         EX Record is a top quality example, with just a few very light surface marks which do not sound, and barely any discernable deterioration in sound quality. Sleeve has slight wear and/or creasing

·         VG Record has some visual surface marks, but still plays to a high standard without any major deterioration in sound quality – just a few clicks or light surface sound in places. Sleeve has normal wear and tear without any major defects. Still a very presentable sleeve.

PACKAGING & POSTAGE

Records are sent out in new “Wrapro” record mailers. These are rectangular and strong, providing excellent protection to the edges and corners. Records are removed from both inner and outer sleeves in order to prevent seam-splits in transit.
