SMALL FACES, OGDENS' NUT GONE FLAKE, 1968 UK IMMEDIATE

Here for auction is a lovely example of the iconic concept album by SMALL FACES titled “OGDENS’NUT GONE FLAKE”, Catalogue Number IMLP 012. This is an ORIGINAL 1968 UK MONO 1st PRESSING on the LILAC IMMEDIATE RECORD LABEL, with the 1st issue CIRCULAR FOLDOUT SLEEVE and complete with the original shaped polythene inner sleeve.     

The circular 5-leaf foldout sleeve, printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd., is in close to EX condition (strictly graded) with only the lightest signs of wear. The vivid colours of the 5 leaves have not faded, and there are no significant creases. The 5 leaves are fully intact. There is just a 2cm tear to one hinge which is shown in close-up in the photos below (the full length of each hinge is 4.5cm). There is also a small name and date of purchase inscription ( 3-6-68) on the back of one of the leaves. The complicated 5-circle design has resulted in one of the most fragile sleeves ever manufactured, and it is very difficult to find a copy of this sleeve in anything like tidy condition. You can see from the photos that this one is a very well preserved example indeed, which should please most collectors.

The vinyl retains a deep mirror-like shine and sits perfectly flat on the turntable. It is fairly solidly pressed and is quite inflexible.

The Matrix Numbers are:

Side 1 – IMLP 012 – 1L     1      G

Side 2 – IMLP – 012 – 2L    1      G

Visually I would grade both sides as VG+, as there are some noticeable sleeve removal type rub marks and hairlines visible under bright light. These are purely superficial and do not cause any significant audio problems. The beautiful lilac Immediate labels are unmarked apart from some spindle traces near the centres.

PLAYGRADE ASSESSMENT:

This is a particularly vibrant and loud-cut mono pressing which sounds sensational played at loud volume. The record plays to a very high standard. All frequencies are crystal clear and there is barely any discernable deterioration in sound quality. There are no pops or loud clicks, and only very low levels of unwanted noise (just occasional light surface sound which is never intrusive). A significantly better playing original copy may be quite difficult to find!

Complete with the correct shaped polythene liner which is in VG condition. This has some creasing and two small tears to one top corner.

GRADINGS

The records that I offer for sale have been critically play-graded, at loud volume, on a Rega Planar 3 turntable fitted with an Elys 2 cartridge. I will only sell records that play to a high standard. My gradings are strict and in accordance with the following descriptions:

·         MINT- Record is superb, almost like new, with just a few sleeve removal type surface marks and no deterioration in sound quality. Sleeve is near perfect in all respects

·         EX Record is a top quality example, with just a few very light surface marks which do not sound, and barely any discernable deterioration in sound quality. Sleeve has slight wear and/or creasing

·         VG Record has some visual surface marks, but still plays to a high standard without any major deterioration in sound quality – just a few clicks or light surface sound in places. Sleeve has normal wear and tear without any major defects. Still a very presentable sleeve

PACKAGING & POSTAGE

Records are sent out in new “Wrapro” record mailers. These are rectangular and strong, providing excellent protection to the edges and corners. Records are removed from both inner and outer sleeves in order to prevent seam-splits in transit.
