Along with Calvin Johnson's K and Mark Robinson's Teenbeat, Berkeley's Slumberland Records is one of the most consistently wonderful independent labels in the U.S., applying a clear aesthetic to their choice of releases and their positioning within the record industry. Largely as a result of the label's focus, Why Popstars Can't Dance, a collection of various releases, seems more like a definitive slice of a particular scene than an assortment of "various artists" -- no matter how different each of the bands actually sounds, there's a line of occasionally spacy indie pop that ties them all together. Moreover, the collection is a testament to the quality of Slumberland's releases -- the disc features two tracks from the seminal indie-pop trio Honeybunch, two near-brilliant songs from pop favorites Rocketship, two of Stereolab's early singles, two amazing tracks from indie-shoegazers Lorelei, and two from Sarah favorites Boyracer. Even the lower-profile selections are equally valuable, including tracks from the Artisans, the Ropers, Linda Smith, Glo-Worm, Jane Pow, San Jose's phenomenal Jupiter Sun and the Steamkings (whose "Darkest Star" is as fine a pop song as ever was written). Most labels throw together compilation overviews that are just random assortments intended to sell merchandise -- but with a label as aesthetically independent as Slumberland, the compilation itself seems as worthwhile as any of the bands' individual work. And for those not prone to searching for indie singles, Why Popstars Can't Dance is an incredible encapsulation of a piece of America's indie-pop scene.
