First released in 1985 and now having celebrated its 40th anniversary, Hell Awaits was the critically acclaimed second album from California thrash metal pioneers and Big 4 alumni (along with Metallica, Megadeth and Anthrax) - Slayer. Following the success of their 1983 debut LP Show No Mercy, producer/label owner Brian Slagel opted to release the band's sophomore follow up, as its predecessor had been the label's highest selling release up to that point. With a notable increase in budget, the band would continue to experiment further with the heavier compositional approach explored on 1984's Haunting The Chapel EP, with many considering that release to be the vital bridging point to the band finally discovering "their sound". Markedly darker and more vicious than their debut, cuts such as the title-track, 'At Dawn They Sleep', and 'Hardening of the Arteries', all touch on elements of thrash, hardcore punk, sludge and death metal, while several tracks have been covered and cited by extreme metal bands such as Cradle Of Filth, Incantation, Benediction, Earth Crisis, Mr. Bungle and Six Feet Under, as vital influences. While a precursor to the breakout success of the hyper-fast Reign In Blood which would release in 1986, Hell Awaits looms as the stranger, more misplaced outlier in the Slayer cannon, renowned for expanding the initial blueprint of what later would become their signature sound.
