THE SIRE STORY (Sire SAM85) UK green vinyl LP in padded PVC sleeve + insert 1978 I have good news and bad news on this release - first the good news! This mega-rare promo Sire sampler was pressed to celebrate the joining up of Sire Records to Warner Brothers in 1978. Only 400 copies were made, and every one who attended the launch party in 1978 was given a copy, it was never for sale to the public. It was pressed in green vinyl, and housed in a bizarre padded PVC sleeve (the source of the bad news, see below), this copy still has the dayglo A4 promo biog sheet (text below) and is a must have for any serious punk/new wave collector, with tracks by The Ramones, The Dead Boys, Richard Hell & The Voiodoids, DMZ, Tuff Darts, The Rezillos, Flamin' Groovies, Talking Heads etc. Now, the bad news. As most vinyl collectors will know, the tacky PVC "protective" covers that were popular in the 70's were anything but protective to vinyl, with prolonged storage inside PVC causing damage to the vinyl, resulting in what's called "blooming", and as this record has been inside the quilted PVC cover for 30+ years, means this record has suffered. It can be seen when the record is held up to the light, the sheen of the record has gone with a rippled dull pattern across the surface. Thankfully this does not materially affect the sound quality too much - it has a little background noise between track but it plays fine. Over the years I have seen three copies up close, and they all had "blooming".

The great age of artifice may be over but not the age of the artefact so who are we to ignore it.
WEA'll trust you were able to make our Sire launch/lunch last week. Such partying and posing hasn't been witnessed in many a moon...so ten points away if you didn't make it along.
Fear not, though, you may have missed the starters but not the main course. Accompanying this letter is a genuine, bona fide collectors item on so many counts that we've actually lost count of them. In the latest manner of lurid plastic sleeving, pressed on garish green vinyl comes your ten track, limited edition, 400 copies-only Sire compilation album to commemorate Sire's pact with WEA UK.
The album, which will not be on sale to the wider public and therefore ain't for review purposes, comes complete with three tracks unavailable in this country, The Ramones "Carbona Not Glue", Richard Hell's "You Gotta Lose" and Radio Birdman's "More Fun", plus teasers for the forthcoming albums by DMZ, Dead Boys, Tuff Darts and The Paley Brothers.
So, privileged ones, prepare yourselves for the cerebral onslaught and remember, Sire week may have been and gone but Sire goes on for ever...
