Description
"The second of this week’s Bishop related shards of troublesome hokum comes from Southern’s impossibly collectible Lattitudes series. Unsurprisingly for the admittedly mystical gentleman there’s a story behind it too – as with all the Lattitudes cds, the album is a document of a recorded session in the Southern Studios, but it was never going to be that easy for this Sun City Girl. Bishop was asked to make the recording in London on his ‘day off’ from a UK tour, he was in Newcastle and had a train booked to go down to London that morning – what could go wrong? Of course due to usual terrorist scares and general leaves-on-the-tracks nonesense, the train was endlessly delayed and Bishop’s guitar case had broken. When he eventually showed up in London tired, wet through and p***ed off, he was greeted with a warm cup of java and a friendly face, and what resulted was an impassioned session reproducing some of the finest improvisations from Bishop’s incredible live shows. It’s strange how such odd circumstances can birth such wonderful music, I can imagine if Bishop had been sitting in a nice warm studio all day, if he’d had his morning eggs and a Panini for lunch the album would have been far less… you know – vibrant. Thankfully what we have in these recordings is pain, sweat, blood, tears, love and that all important spirituality. Hey maybe there is something in that old hoodoo after all? ‘Fingering the Devil’ is Bishop’s finest musical outing since 1998’s crucial ‘Salvador Kali’ – the flamenco influence shining through and with an emotional core that is impossible to ignore. Although Bishop probably wouldn’t agree, this is a surprisingly great summer album – if I had a porch I’d be sitting on it now with these tangled guitar vibrations caressing my homemade lemonade as bees breezed carelessly by. As it is I’ll have to settle for headphones and a desk… such is life! STRICTLY LIMITED COPIES – WHEN IT’S GONE IT’S GONE!" - Boomkat.
