THIS WEEK, I'm offering a selection of TWELVE-INCH 78s, having neglected them in months past. I've bought all-new packing materials in which to send them, anticipating the mad rush. Don't you DARE glaze over!! Collectors have this weird "Idee Fix-ee" that 12" records are boring! These all are anything BUT! Each one deserves a place on your precious shelves!

IF THE BIG-BAND era produced one record for the ages, one that should have been included on the Voyager space probe (now sailing somewhere abaft of the Oort Cloud), surely it was the 1937 "SING, SING, SING" by Benny Goodman and his Orchestra. This was the one time the Goodman band got up on its hind legs, threw out the stops, got original, and went for totally broke. This twelve-inch record, though nine minutes long, still falls short of presenting the entire piece, which luckily you can hear on the famous Carnegie Hall Concert LP.
But the 78 definitely has its merits. You hear the Goodman Victor band at its absolute apex, with GENE KRUPA, HARRY JAMES, VIDO MUSSO, and Goodman himself aiming for the outfield wall! This is a throbbing, wailing, all-stops-out performance; a Swing aspidistra that grew and flowered over a year of experimenting. A very different prospect than all other Goodman records, even their hottest. It's a must-have in any jazz collection. AND for the books, I say it's too damn bad they didn't repeat the experiment!
Unfortunately, "Sing, Sing, Sing" became the template for EVERY 1990's Swing Revival band, with dismal results! But this is the fresh 1937 original, "A jail-and-a-half!" one hepcat critic called it.
This original 1937 "Round Gold" label Victor 36205 is in quite nice E condition. (It's one of the very first with this type of Victor label - had it come out only two weeks earlier, it would've been a Scroll).

These records come from my private collection, which I have been accumulating since 1967, and now am downsizing! My highest priority in these eBay auctions is to give you the best possible idea of a record’s true condition and aesthetic value. I always post at least four clear images, showing the record fore and aft, a close-up of the label, and the whole disc, warts and all. If my purple prose won’t cut it, the pictures will! Shipping is done with expert care. Your record will brave Media Mail in a stout corregated box, between four sheets of cardboard and a couple of “packers.” I hope you are amused by these descriptions, and by the quality of service being offered.
