Label/Format: CBS – matt with textured surfaces on the innermost large circle up the hole. The outer rims are smooth.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with spindle marks on the lighter side of moderate. Played a few times, but this delicate classic album still plays beautifully with little unwanted.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm. The cover has no reference to stereo and even more importantly, neither do the labels with the BPG prefix pointing towards a mono copy. But the SBPG matrixes never lie, this IS a stereo record 100 per cent confirmed by the play-grade.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 127 grams. Around average for CBS at this time.

Rarity: The album itself moderate, this a popular issue. However, very early copies with the flipback cover and rough textured labels are a different matter. Almost all seen are later stereos with smooth covers and labels. Still yet to be fully established as a household name, but this bought the pair to the public’s attention and peaked at number 13 in the UK.

Brief Info: The third S&G album and an absolute masterpiece. Quite short by modern album standards, but every song is sublime. Beautifully recorded and produced, it justifiably sold well, especially so in the United States. For me anyway, this is their very best all-round album and most of my vinyl listens have been via later pressings. Most that surface are heavily played with sound to match. This is overall a very fine example – the vinyl has gentle surface marks but practically all are superficial with no significant audio affect – a couple of clicks at the very end of the record being the odd tiny exception as the sound fades away. A nice little-worn flipbacked cover as well, and the orange inner sleeve exceptional. An indispensible album of the 1960s, every collection should have it.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: a single format with front laminate. This covers all the folds and ends on three rear external flipbacks. The main panel is matt with a very gentle hint of texturing, e.g. not entirely smooth. Printed and made in England by Dawson Rossiter Ltd, London. Includes the vintage orange CBS promotional inner sleeve.

Lamination & Front: The laminate retains a very respectable shine and clarity with decent freshness overall. A little dulling seen under light against the dark backdrop, but any creasing is little and mostly light, a moderate one near the top edge. No lifting or peeling, the right exposed strip were the laminate ends is barely worn at all. Some tip rubbing, mostly on the spine pair and any marks are tiny, very few and light. Overall, this vintage front has survived the years well with only gentle clues to age.

Cover Back: Quite gently aged with most light discolouration or mild grubbiness, that near the edges. Hardly any rubbing and no creasing to the main matt panel. All flipbacks are sound and solid with no damage or lifting. Minimal burr or grubbiness to their ends either. So a back that does remind of age more than the front, but being predominately white and unprotected, that is no major surprise.

Top Edge: Thin, but straight, smooth and unworn, the laminate unchipped and fully intact.

Bottom Edge: Against the odds, the bottom edge is largely the same.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp with little wear. Any thickening or burring minimal and light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: A splendid spine that is little short of as-made. Solid, straight with minimal compression. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate, this being mostly smooth and very clear.

Corners: Moderate tip rubbing on the spine pair, little opposite. Quite fine shape for the left, very fine or better on the right with scant evidence of any significant knocks or dinks.

Cover Summary: A highly respectable all-round example of this more elusive flipbacks 1960’s cover, one that could prove difficult to find much better. This still largely attractive item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): arguably even better. When purchased, the record was inside a replacement inner, this superb CBS one appears hardly even used. Two crisp, totally undamaged window circles, no creasing and all edges unsplit with no repairs. These were never lined. Clean and very fresh looking, this inner is magnificent.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(–): still a very fine visual copy that is clean with equally fine shine and solidly pressed. A copy with light, mostly very fine surface marks as seen critically under bright angled light. But the lack of penetrating stylus scratches is the most important factor along with mostly clean and enjoyable sound. Visually a nice record that should please many collectors, but not for the purists or highly discerning.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: I emphasise again, as the labels give little away – this is a stereo record. This brilliant S&G classic plays mostly above it’s visual grading with little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal, gentle and light, overall a top-quality pressing with no tracking issues*. As mentioned, a couple or three clicks at the very end of the album as the sound fades away, and any contact noise or crackle is very light and infrequent. This being played on a revealing system as listed in detail further down. These predominately acoustic albums are so difficult and this copy is fast approaching 50. So clearly played a few times, but overall it has survived those ‘difficult’ vinyl days well and I still enjoyed this record immensely. Nothing of any great note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this evergreen classic. As an early pressed copy, it could prove difficult to find significantly better and can be highly recommended, but like the cover, not for the absolute audiophile purist who want perfection at any cost.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
