Only the mist cult jazz compositions are as instantly recognisable as Horace Silver's 'Song For My Father.' It's a piece that fully reflects the pianist's ability to blend his own musical sophistication with warmth and soul that resonates in us all. The album was recorded during a period of transition for his quintet and brought together two remarkable lineups and distilled everything that made hard bop so enduring, from the memorable melodies to the grooves you can't resist. Silver's Cape Verdean roots and Brazilian influences abound and the title track became his defining statement, but the surrounding compositions also show a composer at the height of his powers.
