This auction is for my 7" rare autographed double pack of "Mad World" by Tears For Fears.
This is an extremely rare one-off Tears For Fears collectible that was hand signed for me by Tears For Fears keyboardist and co-writer Ian Stanley on the Tears For Fears tour bus / coach outside the Liverpool Adelphi hotel in 1985. I was 17 years old. I was very lucky to get their signatures that day but I will explain how I did.
They were playing the Liverpool Empire theatre that evening and I went down during the day to the theatre and heard them rehearsing as I was at the stage door and the rear loading doors. I even heard Roland singing the Cadbury's Flake advert song as he was testing the sound system! Very funny and unusual to hear! There were other TFF fans there that day and they told me that the band were staying at the nearby Adelphi Hotel. Later when they got onto the coach I quickly got to the hotel to wait for them to arrive and to sign my records, etc. I then saw saw them start getting off the coach to go in the hotel. I don't know what possessed me but I just walked casually onto the coach and shoved my "Ever Met A Day" (pre-Tears For Fears) Graduate record under the nose of Curt Smith and asked if he didn't mind signing my record. He very kindly did so! At that point Roland had made his way off the coach but I then saw keyboard player Ian Stanley and he kindly signed the record sleeve of my "Mad World" double pack (see photo) . Needless to say I was VERY happy with my records.
In the evening when I returned to the theatre to watch the concert I even managed to sneak into their after show party (at the Adelphi Hotel) and meet them once again and get a few pieces signed again. I really don't know where I got the nerve from! I was very confident in those days. Young arrogance I suppose.
As I am now thinning out my large memorabilia collection to make some space, I am sadly selling this great rarity. As well as the great autograph it is also a very rare copy of the Mad World double pack 7" 45rpm single. All in all a top rarity that is truly unique.
I started this listing on Sunday by stating this particular was signed by both Curt and Ian. However I listed it before I got the records out of my collection. I hadn't remembered which records had been signed by which people! Curt signed my Graduate single and only Ian signed this one. (It was about 27 years ago after all.) Apologies if I have confused any bidders.
